A text message from Mel Gibson to Oksana Grigorieva in which he admitted, "Oksana, I wasn't safe for you last night," is a key part of the explosive domestic violence investigation into their January 6 bust-up, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively.

The Lethal Weapon star sent the text the day after he allegedly punched Oksana twice in the head, and tried to choke her while she was holding their baby Lucia, who was two months old at the time.

RadarOnline.com first broke the story - with world exclusive photographs - that Oksana's mouth was badly damaged and she says it is from Mel punching her during a nuclear argument at the superstar's Malibu home.

Her dentist will support her claim that great force snapped off one veneer and cracked another on her upper front teeth.

We also broke the story Wednesday that Oksana was diagnosed with a concussion by another doctor, who could prove to be a powerful witness for her.

Now RadarOnline.com has obtained a series of text messages the pair traded in the aftermath of the blow-up.

"Oksana, I wasn't safe for you last night," Mel texted at 3:25 pm on January 7.

"I spent two hours with a therapist today and have regained some perspective. What I'm telling you know is I am safe & would like to come by and make amends to you, Sascha and Lucia. I won't stay, just let you say your peace and I'll say mine."

Gibson's lawyers have denied that he ever hit Oksana and have charged that the Russian-born muscian has tried to extort the Oscar-winning actor/director.

But this new text message seems to come extremely close to an outright admission of violence with Mel's confession that he wasn't "safe" for Oksana.

On audio tapes, obtained and released exclusively by RadarOnline.com, Mel told Oksana she "f*cking deserved it" when she complained that he hit her, while she was holding Lucia.

The text message exchange is in Oksana's phone, which she was ordered to surrender to authorities as part of the official investigation into claims of domestic violence.

Mel sent six text messages in 30 minutes before Oksana responded.

Mel also messaged Oksana that he wanted to apologize to her 12-year-old son Sascha, whose birth father is James Bond actor Timothy Dalton.

Oksana answered, via text: "I have two broken front teeth and a concussion.  I can not c u today, I'm hurting. U can apologize to Sascha some other time."

The Braveheart star sent five messages to Oksana after her response.

In one, Mel begged to see her and asked: "Did you get them (the teeth) fixed yet?

"When can I see you? I need to see you this evening & then I promise I'll leave you alone for as long as you want.

"If only for 10 minutes. Please."

The full exchange went like this:
