Like another magazine, we too are "well aware that the dangers of counterfactual speculation ... are almost as grave as those of unbridled futurism," but that doesn't stop us from showing you some video from Gabriel Range's speculative Bush assassination mockumentary, Death of a President. The movie premiered this week at the Toronto Film Festival and is the latest entry in the Bush assassination fantasy canon. It follows Nicholson Baker's Checkpoint (a "scummy little book" according to Leon Wieseltier in The New York Times Book Review), and a recent Harper's editorial by Ben Metcalf in which he wonders, "Am I allowed to write that I would like to hunt down George W. Bush, the president of the United States, and kill him with my bare hands?" Then there's Cindy Sheehan who fantasized about snuffing out the president as a baby. (Sheehan and others have found their words of criticism and magical thinking used against them by rightwing pundits, notably Michelle Malkin who trumpets KILL BUSH MANIA in her syndicated column this week.)
