Movie Review: Alice in Wonderland

Vibrant, full of odd little creatures and flecked with dry wit, Alice in Wonderland reinterprets classic stories while embracing modern animation technology to the hilt. Featuring dense graphics and sumptuous aesthetics, director Tim Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll’s books (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass) is all beauty and whimsy, but fails to make us care much about what happens to the hapless cast of characters.
The film, which opens today, follows 19-year-old Alice (Mia Wasikowska) from a posh garden party into the fantasy world of Wonderland that she first knew as a young girl. Nothing here is as it seems and soon Alice is growing and shrinking with a bite of magic cake or a sip of special elixir before stepping out to meet the locals. Greeted by her new coterie of companions -- including the Dormouse (Barbara Windsor), White Rabbit (Michael Sheen) and Tweedledee and Tweedledum (Matt Lucas) -- the fair-skinned teen is suddenly forced into a face-off with destiny, in which she must dethrone the wicked Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and help the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) return to power.
While the new Alice in Wonderland never pulls us close to any of its characters, casting is one of its strong points. Wasikowska (previously of In Treatment) is a particularly stellar pick, as she displays girlishness and adult defiance to embody a character that walks the line between both. Above ground, Alice is beset with family politics, societal pressures and a general sense that there’s got to be more to life than getting married off to a nose-picking rich guy. Below ground, she’s thrust into the role of a child-warrior in a world where competing agendas vie for power, and everyone is wackier than she is.
Movie Review : From Paris With Love
The wackiest of Wonderland’s many oddballs is the Mad Hatter (Johnny Depp), whose moods change from moment to moment thanks to an overdose of Mercury (a notable detail that goes without mention). As Alice’s closest ally in Wonderland, the Hatter’s affection for her is one of the film’s few emotional anchors, and the pair’s ultimate parting is one of saddest moments of the movie. In contrast, the Red Queen serves largely as Alice’s comic relief, belting out orders and -- with a head that’s both literally and figuratively inflated -- bathing in the warmth of self-delusion and sycophantic praise.
Still, there are some dark undercurrents that never quite surface, and therefore never quite add up. At one point, the Knave of Hearts (Crispin Glover) -- aka, the Red Queen’s houseboy -- pins Alice against a wall and nearly rips her clothes off. The White Queen, meanwhile, has either been A. eating a too much magic cake, B. working on rage issues or C. taking acting lessons from Johnny Depp, circa Pirates of the Caribbean.
Alice in Wonderland stays true to its roots as a lively and mildly subversive story, and benefits from Burton’s fanciful style and dedication to aesthetics. It misses the themes that made Carroll's books so good, and loses much of the original meaning.
Mad Hatter Tea Party: Go Crazy!

In the spirit of Tim Burton’s new Alice in Wonderland movie ( which hits movie theatres tomorrow – watch for our review!) , the china brand Wedgwood has some suggestions to help you throw the perfect Mad Hatter Tea Party, daaaarlink. And as everyone knows, tea parties are English, so bring your manners!
Think Fun, Not Fussy. Create a chic, relaxed atmosphere with comfortable chairs, a central table, brightly colored fresh flowers and an invitation that sets the tone. Traditional tea time is 4 p.m., but schedule your party for whatever works best for you and your guests anytime between 3-6 p.m.
Make Your Table Talk-Worthy. Choose tight, floral arrangements in low vases to make conversation across the table easy. You might even consider a teapot as a floral vase. Bring the theme to life with colorful linens and accents. What does Mad Hatter and whimsical mean to you? Gather the basics – teapot, teacups and saucers, luncheon size plates (your salad plates are perfect), a small milk jug, a sugar bowl (preferably with sugar cubes), and a plate for lemon slices. Your flatware should be set with forks on the left, knives and spoons on the right with knife blade pointed toward the plate.
Mix and Match Like Mad. Your place settings need not match. Our personal favorite is the Wedgwood’s Harlequin Polka Dot Collection, a fanciful pattern in a fun mixture of pink and blue hues that look like Easter but would be perfect for a Hatter tea party!
Let Loose with the Tea. Good selections of loose teas (preferable to teabags) are essential. If you are not steeping your tea in the teapot, provide individual infusers (hollow, silver balls with holes on a thin chain) to pack loose tea into. Begin the brewing process with cold, filtered or bottled (not tap) water. Did you know that teabags were created more than 100 years ago as a way to send customers tea samples? Loose tea has been around for more than 5,000 years!
Assemble Savory & Sweet. Savories are tiny sandwiches that can take on a multitude of ingredients – fill interesting breads with smoked salmon, egg salad or cucumbers and cream cheese. On the sweet side, scones and biscuits with plenty of jams and clotted cream and shortbread or simple cakes add a nice touch. Fanciful cupcakes with Alice in Wonderland designs can be a great signature take-home gift. Display sweets on a beautiful footed cake plate, an elegant tiered plate or any beautiful small tray.
Pinkies Up! Lastly, although your pinkie does not have to be literally up, consider the following ideas when it comes to proper decorum: always serve from the right, take small sips of your tea and avoid slurping, and never overfill your plate. This is tea, not a meal, little piglets!

RadarOnline.com has three new clips from Disney's highly-anticipated film Alice in Wonderland.
In the first clip from Tim Burton's latest fantasy masterpiece, Johnny Depp's Mad Hatter climbs atop a table to welcome Mia Wasikowska's 19-year old Alice back to his tea party after years apart. He's joined by some interesting furry friends who chime in on the zany fun.
The second clip features Anne Hathaway's White Queen whipping up a whimsical potion to help Alice fit in a little better.

Helena Bonham Carter's Red Queen dominates the third clip where she hilariously questions her frog guards. When one crosses her, she fires off her famous "off with his head" decree.

Disney released a new photo Wednesday of Johnny Depp as The Mad Hatter in the much anticipated children’s classic Alice In Wonderland.
The movie, shot in 3D is described as an “epic fantasy adventure” and stars Johnny Depp alongside Mia Wasikowska, as 19-year old Alice, who returns to the whimsical world she first encountered as a young girl, reuniting with her childhood friends: the White Rabbit, Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the Dormouse, the Caterpillar, the Cheshire Cat, and of course, the Mad Hatter. In the movie Alice embarks on a fantastical journey to find her true destiny and to end the Red Queen’s reign of terror.

The flick, brought to life by visionary director Tim Burton, looks set to live up to all the hype – and more.
With the colorful characters and larger than life visually stunning sets Alice In Wonderland is sure to wow the crowds.
