Am I the only one that didn't have much knowledge of Rhodes, but what little I did know was wholly negative; the race for Africa, the diamond cartel, the racism, etc. The author here is positing a statement that might have been true like 50 years ago (cecil rhodes is considered first and foremost a great philanthropist) but not true to today, any more than we lionized Lord Stanley and King Leopold.
