HOME SHOPPING Mall apartment
Work at the mall, shop at the mall, eat at the mall ... live at the mall?
Providence, Rhode Island, artist Michael Townsend did for shopping centers what Tom Hanks did for airports in Terminal when he decided to furtively construct an apartment in 2003, at the Providence Place Mall—and then move in. Identifying an unused space at the center of the complex, Townsend, along with his Tape Art collective cohorts, hauled in 4,000 lbs. of cinder blocks and installed a door, effectively creating a mini-apartment.
