To his surprise, replies soon started pouring in. Everyone from Dick Cheney and Donald Rumsfeld (on tree-fort diplomacy) to Oprah Winfrey, Mister Rogers, Janet Reno, and members of the Supreme Court had words of wisdom for Billy. ("I like the Egg McMuffin," wrote Justice Clarence Thomas when asked about his favorite McDonald's food. "Actually, I like almost everything there.") Responding to Billy's idea for a "Hustler for kids," Larry Flynt wrote back encouraging the fourth grader to "Hang in there. You'll be 18 before you know it."
As it turns out, no group hates to disappoint a child more than convicted killers, all of whom responded promptly to Billy's questions about dropping out of school. Their letters, published here for the first time, range from criminally insane to downright sensible, offering snapshots of the personalities behind some of America's most hideous crimes. Recently, Radar asked Billy to follow up with his mentors as a college student. Bill,
Greetings. Received your letter. Glad to hear my letter to you in '99 made a difference. When do you graduate? Yeah, get me a subscription to Radar Magazine. What is it about? Know any Asian girls willing to correspond? Send pictures. You can photocopy 5 on 1 page or send 'em singular. Nothing scenic though. Send some of girls in bikinis. Do you go clubbing? Seen any good movies? Saw 3:10 to Yuma the other day. It was an OK Western. Didn't do too good at the box office though. Do you have family? I'm youngest of five. That's all for now. Take it E/Z write when you get a chance.
Your friend,
Richard

Résumé: Until his arrest in 1996, Kaczynski sent out 16 mail bombs in 18 years, killing three and injuring 23, and was the target of one of the most extensive investigations in FBI history. His 35,000-word manifesto on the evils of industrialized society, which he forced newspapers to publish on the threat of more violence, was remarkably free of spelling and grammatical mistakes. He's now doing life in Colorado's Federal Supermax prison, where he has apparently been too busy to follow up with Billy a second time.
Notable Quote: "I can't advise you about whether to drop out of school, because I don't know anything about you."
Kacynzski's response:
Erik is currently serving a life sentence in California's Pleasant Valley State Prison. Reportedly, he and Lyle, a resident of Mule Creek State Prison, have not spoken in more than 10 years. He has been equally quiet with grown-up Billy.

I apologize for the length of time it has taken me to respond. That will not happen again. Tell me a little about yourself Billy. How old are you, why do you want to drop out of school? Are you having problems at school? What sort of things do you do with yourself, hobbies, etc. It is hard for me to imagine that you should drop out of school. Fill me in some more on the details of your life.
I am here and would like to listen to you and do what I can to help you Billy. But I really need to know more about you. No need to send stamps or that sort of thing. Thank you though Billy.

has anyone read the manson letter carefully?
Well, I'll get back to that in a #>/sec... First, what caught my eye about the manson post was the very distinctive photo. I reside in Vermont, and well, that photo made me stop dead in my tracks for a few minutes. Mainly because I'm pretty sure that I've been to this place, or maybe just a few hundred like it, at some point in my life. Evidence: 1) weathering patern on barn/shack/covered-bridge-ish-thing. 2) Dirt Road.
3) Tree species. 4) New Power Lines -- we had a huge ice-storm in '98 --. 5) Post-and-beam house in background.
But one big thing didn't sit right... the time stamp says "98 4 19" and the trees are never this green by the end of April. However, a few quick checks on weather and news archives revealed that '98 had temperatures consistantly in the upper 70s from early march through may. It was one of the earliest springs on record. In addition, on 4-19 the weather was overcast, 90% precip, and unseasonably foggy. So one of the big reasons I'm interested in this is that it would seam that Chucky M has an original photo from somewhere near where I live....
Back to his letter, because this is where it either all gets really interesting, or where you all call me crazy and flame me out for ruining a perfectly good killer-bashin'.
Some oddities (other than the crazy) about these letters:
1) End of the first letter certainly sounds like a clue/challenge to me -- "I bet you don't remember this - you don't even know where it's at. HAHA. I got you there." So That got me to thinking: maybe I already have the first clue?
2) At the beginning of the second letter he draws our attention very sharply to a few key themes:
2a) the idea of replacing syllables with numbers in some sort of pattern -- ie. he separates the numerical "4 GOT" from all other instances of "forgit".
2b) the dissection of certain words into separate phonemes -- ie. "Hay Lo Soul".
2c) The selective use of homo-nyms/phones. He even points out later that this is not simply because he's stupid, he specificaly says he's "playing clown words to say I didn't forgit".
2d) selective capitalization. could be some sort of an anagram... not sure yet.
2e) this one is hard to notice until later in the letter, but he only uses "+"-signs, never the word "and", and for the entire first half of the letter, he uses "to" at any place where he could have used "+".
3) The end of the first letter talks pretty specifically about two key points. The first is that Billy "don't remember" --notice the use of the word don't, even though everything else is in the past tense--. The second point has something to do with geography and space --"where it's at", "got you there". The rememberance theme is picked back up on right away in the second letter, and the excplicit change from "hear" to "here" show that the spacial theme is as well.
So if we assume that Chuck doesn't ask everyone why they've forgotten an important place (which is a pretty big, but necessary assumption), that means one of two things: 1) That the entire thing is a hoax, and that Billy wrote both sets of letter, or 2) the more likely option that Charles Manson spends a bunch of time on the internet researching all sorts of exentric things, found out about "Billy", and has decided to use this as an oprotunity to encode a message in a published letter. I don't know, it kind of seems like his style.
So what do you all think? Am I as loonie as Manson, am I way too into Crypto, or is there the chance that all of these Crypto-red-flags actually do point to something worth finding out? I'll be working on it, let me know if any of you other procrastinating crazzies decide to do the same.
--Oh, almost I almost forgot(git) the most crucial thing.... the transcription missed one of the margin notes. On the second page, as far as I can tell it says: "The book warrom Turns - code3"
I didn't notice this until after I had gone through all the other stuff, so now I'm even more convinced. Or maybe just loonier...

@ bobolikebeer
I too was taken aback by the scenic photo and had that feeling of being at this location at some point. It looks very much like the surrounding area near my hometown in West Virginia. Charles Manson spent much of his childhood with family members in Charleston, West Virginia which is very close to my hometown.
Your point about Vermont could be correct as well. My father and I vacation in Vermont each summer and I may have come across this location at some time while doing some exploring. I am always shocked by the resemblence of Vermont and West Virginia.
I picked up on some oddities in his writing as well but coming from Charles Manson it could mean everything or nothing.
Posted by: thekotton on April 29, 2008 1:20 PM
Is there anywhere in Vermont with red surface soil? I'd say it's somewhere further south, given the tree in bloom in the background, if the date on the photo is correct.

I will let you all figure it out Bit within the first sentence....

this was a good read, thanks!
i was also pretty fixated by the Manson letters. Especially creeped out by the photo for some reason, namely due to the date... 4/19. Pretty important day to the radical right:
* Day before Hitler's birthday, therefore lots of Neo-Nazi activities,
* 1993- Fire ends siege on Branch Davidian complex in Waco, TX,
* 1995- Oklahoma City Bombings
and... wait for it....
* 1971- Manson sentenced to death
And is it just me, but I kinda don't think there is any good news to be found in that shack. Like maybe a follower killed someone, took them there, then mailed him the photo. But maybe I have been watching too many movies.

I find this pretty disgusting. You take a handful of men who found fame through the slaughter of the innocent, and use them to further your own name and publication. sick. there is nothing creative or intelligent to be found here. you could have found similar results by writing random pantients of your local funny farm, but oh wait, no one would know their names. better to make light of mass murders. you silly turd gurgler, do something productive.
Posted by: futhey on April 29, 2008 4:36 PM
Yes, Futhey. Alan Greenspan slaughters the innocent. But only through interest rate hikes. (Did you even get past the first three letters?)

You are looking northward, it's raining out, it's unusually warm for a spring day,it's reddish brown dirt, so it's the south with hilly/mountanous area, seal chip road, you are at an intersection, you are not far from a medium community because of the size of the telephone cable on the bottom, the buried gas line.
I'd say it was somewhere in the region of VA-NC off the Tidewater area going into the Piedmont area. There are RedBud trees, Cedars, Maples, Poplar Oak and a maple tree in the yard area.

The barn in the Manson photo reminds me of places here in Broome county, N.Y.
I go to Vermont every summer and I see a alot of barns like that too.
Annyhoo a clue or head game.

The intersting thing about the Manson photo is that there are three images of men in the lower left hand corner.
Posted by: gnk on April 30, 2008 4:25 PM
Just a couple of other thoughts... The pinwheels in the second letter begin with a swastika... And he writes something about a hillbilly being able to type. That ties in with the whole WV thing. I lived for a time in Western Maryland and am certain I've seen that as well.
Perhaps our Billy's return address was WV?
And what's with the umlaut "ΓΌ" before you in the To Too Two 2 line?
Posted by: atomicvamp on April 30, 2008 5:24 PM
No, I see the CA on Manson's letter. That isn't it. My bad.
Posted by: atomicvamp on April 30, 2008 5:25 PM
Some notes for Mr_Anonymous...I also noted a number of important parts of the 2nd letter from Charles Manson, and these are:
1. There are a number of clues pointing to Massachusetts, not Vermont.
A. The scribble encompassing "Hey Lo Soul" is in the shape of Massachusetts
B. The acronym "A.T.W.A" also refers to a union group based out of Lawrence, MA which has ties to some Chicago Anarchists
C. The multiple homonyms of the number 2 could be referring to an address, which I am still working on.
More soon...but back to work for now.

On the page about the letter to/from Kaczynski:
"His 35,000-word manifesto on the evils of industrialized society, which he forced newspapers to publish on the threat of more violence, was remarkably free of spelling and grammatical mistakes."
This makes no sense. Kaczynski was a professor of mathematics; I'd hardly call a professor that can write correctly "remarkable". What's remarkable is that the article author would write something so stupid.

Just starting to look at this in depth, but I notices the "VA" separated from the rest of "CONVALUTION", which is also misspelled. The extra numbers would seem to indicate 22246 I think. That's the zip code for just outside of Arlington, VA. I believe an earlier commenters mentioned that the foliage, weather, dirt, road, infrastructure would be consistent with such a location.
Somebody who has more time on their hands, I implore you to work on this. I need answers.
PS: I find Chuck's ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to his newsletter.

by the looks of it...all of you who have said something grew up normal and are american or have adapted to this style of living.dont get mad,,,listen. Manson is not the one to worry about first of all.hahaha, second of all.view his letter,in a dark light and on a gel screen.tilt the screen to about 65degrees and read it.dont get too close..its word algorithmic patterns spelling out something he used to teach to those he knew.Inputing mindset into you actually.and that location on the pic is in Colorado.....realize,Manson is not of the normal way.as neither was einstein nor hitler nor was peron nor Hus$ein, nor Sendero de luz....nor Tesla...T4 oe heel. He is not of you normal people who have not really been introduced to this thinking. jus mainstream. He actually is not the discoverer of this thought. He had 3 before him whom he sought in his days whom taught him Mindset, quant, and senemonism. yes its a word, but only known to us.look to the light, see the shadow, perceive the intention, follow the result, interrogate the real, escudrinar it all. Know not what you look for...know what you dont know and that will open what you never would know..
besides that, just read the letter not in the neat form they gave. In his way see it. In his way feel it. oh. and that picture..youll never know unless you dont want to know lolololololol. 7 is key. 6 is ol skul. and 5 bein meant for grace here was meant for reality. figure it out, and youll see that manson welll, he just dont mean what he wrote hahaha..careful what wish to seek though.you know he speaks of us...

I find this whole affair extremely disturbing. Mr. Geerhearts willingness to misrepresent himself to these people smacks of the worst kind of irresponsible and sensationalist journalism. The kind of crap you read in supermarket tabloids. It surprises me that he is not the focus of numerous lawsuits.
I actually found some of the early stuff interesting and amusing. But the Manson letters chilled me to the bone. I find it incredible that after nearly 4 decades of incarceration the man is still undeniably 100% insane. I mean, totally "whacked". This guy can never be let out. Though I'm not a religious person, I still can't help but think of him as the persona of the Antichrist.
Equally disturbing is one of the posts before mine. I don't know who you are MaverictonElite. But since you seem to somehow understand the Manson letters, and have posted something equally insane and unintelligible, my hope is that you are one of his cellmates. I hope at least that you are locked up somewhere. Your post is a pretty good indication that you are as just as "whacked" as Charlie is.
You speak of "Us" in your post. My suspicion is that this refers to some Fraternity of some sort. Out of curiosity, would it be the Masonic Lodge? You even mention a word "senemonism" that you qualify as only known to "Us". Who is "Us"? I did a Google search and you're right. The word doesn't exist in any modern dictionary.
Since your post has little merit other than the typical "Lets baffle them with bullshit", I thought I should come back with something equally baffling. I've always wanted to write something Biblical in scope. I wrote this tonight, just for you.
"Know this, you monster, you beast, you demon from hell, you bastard spawn of the Devils loins, we, the sane people of this world remember the "Silence of the Lambs". But we are not lambs, and we will not be silent! We will fight you till the "End of Days". And at the "End of Days" you will be destroyed!
Righteousness and love will prevail. And all memory of the "Dark Lord" will be erased, all his spawn hunted down and killed. Massacred without mercy in the same way he massacred us. And when every last minion of the Devil has been destroyed a "New Age" begins for mankind. A "Renaissance" that will be unequaled in human history. An age of enlightenment!
Art, Music and Science will prosper, as the people revel in the glory of sunshine. The darkness will be no more, and evil will no longer rule the land of men."
Pretty good huh? I just made that up. Just slightly more imaginative than your word of hate, which doesn't even exist. Go back to hell asshole. You are not welcome here!

Hello, I don't know NEARLY enough about decoding or Manson to know if this theory is good, bad, or downright awful. So I decided to post it here. Manson misspells "subjugate" as "subjewgate". Well, after re-reading this practically 70 times, I started to pay special attention to the swastikas. My mind eventually started breaking up words, and I saw "Sub-Jew-Gate". I know this is probably wrong, but couldn't sub mean underground or underwater, jew mean the jewish people, and gate mean lock up? so, maybe he was trying to pound racism early into billy's head, or knew about these being fake, and trying to pound a message about anti- Judaism into all OUR heads, telling our subconsciousness to lock up jews underground? I don't know, it's probably wrong, just thought some people might be interested.

That isn't Charlie's handwriting. Charlie likely handed the letter off to someone else to respond to, which he has done many times in the past, thus freaking out folks on the outside. There're folks a lot nuttier than Charlie in there.
Posted by: spiffylemonz on May 12, 2008 10:20 AM
Just a thought,
There's a number on the pack on the photograph that Manson sent. It's some sort of processing number I assume. I don't know if it's stock on the photo paper or if it was added by the lab when the pictures were developed. It might provide a clue if someone knew how to find out how to read it.
It reads: 004 33 01 N1NNN 03AU 467
There's a photolab at most big box stores now a days... the folks who work at one of those might have an idea of how to read the numbers.
Also, the form letters from famous people weren't really all that cool. Although it's amusing to imagine someone in Ahhhhhhnolds office spending a tense day debating whether or not to reply to Billy's letter...
"Does acknowledgement of said letter constitute an admission of guilt? Maybe just an 8x10 of the Govenor slapping Condi on the butt?"
Posted by: deadender on June 3, 2008 6:00 PM
I don't think the transcription of Charlie's first letter is right. I don't think he wrote "I got you there." He wrote "U GOT GAY THERE." Big difference. He's probably making fun of Billy and the little friend who advised him to write.
What little kid is savvy enough to know that convicts need the paper and envelope supplied? Most people who haven't had an incarcerated friend, family member, or pen pal would know that. It's a dead giveaway to the recipient.
Posted by: Schmutzi on June 4, 2008 1:45 PM
Why not search weather for that date in areas that are in contention? I'd help, but I'm way too lazy - I'll just sit here and watch.
Posted by: Kryx on June 13, 2008 4:53 PM
Hey, have fun trying to break the code.
I saw the swastika too. But we already know Charlie's into that sort of thing.
The U with an umlaut looks like a "Kilroy" face to me.
To Too Two 2--Echolalia--Schizophrenic. It means he repeats sounds, and Charlie does that a lot. (Apparently he even writes that way.) Same with "Con Va Lution" and "subjewgation." Another racist remark. Charlie has always said anything racist, religious, controversial, paranoid psychobabble that popped into his head. It does interest me how fast he thinks... And that some of the things that come out of his mouth are actually very astute. What a wasted life.
He couldn't have taken the picture himself, so he probably got it from some other weirdo-wannabe like MavericktonElite and passed it on. He knows what creeps people out, and plays on our fears. What horrible thing might have happened in that barn? He like to leave us wondering...
ATWA- That was Charlie's own idea. If only he could hold a thought, let alone a job, Charlie might have been a great man. Or not.
Anyway, see if you can find a hidden message if you want. But it looks pretty clear to me. A crazy, bored old man in solitary, (who always loved an audience) with nothing better to do than try to mess with our minds. Still.
Happy Friday the 13th!

Manson cracks me up. First off, if the date is correct on the photo, that is not Vermont. As a Vermonter, you would have to be significantly retarded to think that such lush foliage could be indicative of April in the hinterlands of the Green Mountain State--perhaps if the road was paved with 8" muddied tire ruts instead of asphalt, but alas... The best part of this correspondence is that you just can't fool Charlie (and by "Charlie" I mean the "criminally insane"). You say to Manson: What's 2+2? Manson answers: What elevator coffee hammer HAHAHA?????? HI BILLY!!!! Piggy piggy toaster strudel. I say: Brilliant.
