Tokyo's freakiest fashion trend: goth Lolitas

PAGE 1 / 1

Westerners have always had a curious fixation with the styles and trends of Japan. It is a country, after all, where people cry and scream in the presence of Tinsley Mortimer's handbag collection. A bit harder to mediate with American fashion sensibilities, however, is Japan's current obsession with "Gothic Lolita"—a rather bizarre sartorial milieu in which ruffled skirts, lacey stockings, and Mary Janes are paired with black eyeliner, facial piercings, and other accessories typically associated with students responsible for school shootings.

Far from being a fringe trend, Gothic Lolita clothing and accoutrements are widely available in Japanese shopping malls, as well as recognizable on popular TV programs and in high-fashion magazine spreads. While the prevalent Goth-Lo aesthetic isn't nearly as overtly sexual as Nabokov's heroine, the juxtaposition at the heart of the look—that of the cheerful schoolgirl as pained social pariah—is certainly visually jarring. Below, an exclusive look at Masayuki Yoshinaga's Gothic & Lolita (Phaidon Press), a collection of the photographer's work documenting one of the most popular fashion genres in Tokyo and Osaka.

Really, you're just one of the many people who just knows nothing about a foreign fashion. Get a book and edumacate yourself, plz.

P.S., I don't see how parasols and handbags have anything to do with school shootings.

It's painfully evident you know virtually nothing about lolita. As already stated: please educate yourself before writing an article bursting with inaccuracies.

Many of the photo's in the book are not actually lolita but goth, punk, cyber ect.

Wow did you do ANY research at all?? Gothic Lolita is a subgenre to Lolita. Not every Lolita is a Gothic Lolita there are other kinds. Also, half the people in your gallery aren't even Lolitas they are just plain goth O.o;;;..Maybe next time you should do some work before writing an article because you sound uneducated. Your giving your readers the wrong information.

It's a pity your article and photo gallery are misleading. My heart nearly leapt with joy when I beheld the cover image.... "Gracious me!" said I, "a lolita fashion article that actually depicts the style properly?"

Appearances tend to deceive, though. It is disturbingly clear that you have done no research, or you would not have included goths and punks in your slideshow. An informed writer should have mentioned that Gothic Lolita is but ONE ASPECT of a diverse stye. You certainly should have known better than to link Nabokov's book with this fashion (as the shared name is purely coincidence).... And associating gothic-style accessories with "students responsible for school shootings" is just the sort of concept that keeps Americans ignorant and afraid of kids wearing black. For goshsake, do some research before you release this kind of story!

RESEARCH!

Wow, you sound like a complete, uneducated, idiot. I love this fashion, and wear it on a regular basis. How dare you make it into something that it isn't. Do some fucking research asshole before you write another article!

Excuse me, but a few of the outfits you showcased are NOT in the least bit lolita. It saddens me to see the fashion I love be called the "freakiest fashion trend in Tokyo" when many consider it to be beautiful, cute, and charming. Before you post an article for the whole internet to read, at least make it accurate. Also, the school shooting reference was completely uncalled for and irrelevant to lolita fashion.

This is probably the worst article about this fashion I've ever read. As many of the previous comments have said in their own ways (though I feel that trying to use proper language without swearing is a more meaningful response), in writing this article, you have shown that you know nothing about this fashion.
First I would like to point out that lolita fashion has many categories. It is not all Gothic Lolita. The picture on this cover is Sweet Lolita, or Classical Lolita, not Gothic.
Second, good lolita fashion has strict guidelines. While piercings can be acceptable, they are most certainly not an aspect of this fashion. In fact, many lolitas frown upon them. Black eyeliner is rarely acceptable.
Third, many of the photos in this book have nothing to do with Lolita fashion, Gothic or otherwise.
This has absolutely nothing to do with lolita. Nothing at all! Plus, I fail to see anything unique, original, or even cool or interesting, about that outfit that merits it being looked at more that once, let alone in a book.
I'm pretty sure I can say for all the lolitas out there, that we do not appreciate this book or your article, neither of which lend themselves to a true view of our fashion.
Also I cannot understand why a historically based fashion is the "freakiest" fashion in Japan. And Lolita accessories have nothing to do with school shootings. I've never shot anything with a tote bag or a parasol.

Wow. Simply wow. This article was put to rout with a ridiculous amount of inaccuricies. It pains me to think I nearly became excited when I saw the topic of this article. Then I read it... and then saw the example photographs. Like was said before, way to go on the research there. It leads me to question how much effort is put forward on other articles on this site.

The magazine you referenced said Gothic "AND" Lolita. You don't generally combine two words when they are separated with that conjuction. Yes, there is a sub-category that is known as "Gothic Lolita", but this article failed to even represent that properly. What this article showed was the "Gothic" section of the Gothic "AND" Lolita magazine.

I would love to know the sources for this article other than the magazine you have displayed with it.

But like most others that type up half assed articles on this one subculture fashion, I can't muster any hope that this author really gives a damn about continually perpetuating the wrong ideas about this subculture.
