Obsessions
Appetite for Extinction
(continued)

BREEDING TO NOWHERE Clive Owen in Children of Men

So why is the human race here, other than to shop and watch reality TV?
The biosphere does not need Homo sapiens. We are the exotic invader.

Why go extinct? Why not just chop us down to a
population of 10,000?

It is quite likely that when we get down to 10,000 or so humans, which is what we were about 73,000 years ago, people would start breeding again, because it would look like there was plenty of room.

Not to mention easier access to parking spots and concert tickets.
Yes.

What is a realistic, sustainable population level for the world?
As long as there is one breeding couple on the planet, the biosphere is in danger.

Where do you stand on the political spectrum?
I think anarchy is the best form of politics.

If no more of us were ever born, could be some very fine specimens of Homo sapiens in the end as they're allowed to reach their full potentialIsn't anarchistic lawlessness what resulted in a misuse of the earth's resources? Most of the environmental improvements that have come about are the result of laws and sanctions.
I define anarchy as no rulers, not necessarily no rules. It's our domination of each other and of the planet that has gotten us where we are today.

You had a vasectomy when you were 25. Have you ever used the line, "It's okay, I'm fixed," to pick up women?
No, I never did, but I guess that would have been a good approach. Sort of a way to filter the dating pool.

Whey you walk by a couple pushing two kids in a stroller do you approach them and urge them not to breed again? Do you curse them under your breath?
I feel sorry for them. It's probably the ultimate form of denial to intentionally set out to create another human today. It's the equivalent of renting rooms in a burning building, renting them to our children no less. My girlfriend would like to have a baby but she knows it's not going to happen.

As Ross Perot used to say, that dog won't hunt any more. I think she picked the wrong man for that job.
[Laughs] Yes.

There's an irony to your goal. If you succeed, nobody will be here to appreciate your success. Assuming anybody is still around, how would you like to be remembered?
We all want a legacy. I'd like to think mine was the prevention of a few humans from being born.

File Under: Les U. Knight, The Voluntary Human Extinction Movement

This is an old idea, and one most young sociologists come to. I speak, of course, on the notion that human beings are like a cancer on the planet, and need to be expunged. It's basically an unsupportable opinion, however. He's entitled to his opinion.
