For the first time since her surprising split from musician Ben Harper hit the press over the weekend, Laura Dern surfaced in Los Angeles.

On Friday, Harper filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. The news came as a shock to many given that the couple and their two children were in Hawaii less than a month ago for the wedding of Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder and model Jill McCormick.

Despite the recent sad news, Dern looked relatively upbeat on Monday as she arrived at a Beverly Hills office. She smiled warmly at the valet attendant as she made her way out of her car, chatting on her cell phone the entire time.

She and Harper were married for five years.
