Mindy has had a lot of drama in her 34 years -- she’s been arrested, faced drug charges and probation violations, she was physically battered by a boyfriend, lost custody of her son, and publicly exposed her demons on Celebrity Rehab. But now, her publicist Kat Atwood tells RadarOnline.com “Getting back guardianship of her son Zander is her priority.”

When Zander was 18 months old, Mindy was sent to jail for violating probation stemming from a dispute with her mother. At that time, Atwood says Mindy signed over “temporary guardianship” to her mother Gayle Inge for Zander’s “safety and health.” Over the few years, Mindy has lived in Nashville and occasionally sees her son in Ft. Meyers, Florida. Now, Zander is 4 years old and Mindy has been in and out of rehab and is ready to take Zander back.

But RadarOnline.com has learned that a custody battle is taking place in Florida courts. Atwood says Inge “has taken a liking to Zander” and doesn’t want to turn over custody to her daughter.

Today, the country singer, who is releasing her first album in eight years, believes “music is her therapy.” Atwood says McCready wrote the title song I’m Still Here while she was in jail.

The grandmother has been with the child on a daily basis since very early on. It would be difficult for him to suddenly go back to his mother. Mindy needs to prove herself a while longer. She had been a mess for a long time.

I saw her on clebrity rehab and how she stayed at some chicks house refused to leave & when she did the Eric Dane tape was stolen from the house,,she is a nutcase and a danger to the child

hope she has her act together for the sake of her son. It's not too late for her to be the mother he needs. It's obvious she wants to be a parent to him, let's hope she's in a good place now to do that.

A terribly difficult and painful situation..If I were messed up I would wan my kids but I wouldn't want to hurt them by dragging them along when unstable myself...poor kid
