Long before Charlie Sheen got violent with current wife Brooke Mueller, he established his penchant for physically hurting women by severely beating girlfriend Brittany Ashland.

Now Ashland's attorney has come forward to urge the Colorado District Attorney handling the current case to consider Sheen's history of violence against women while deciding whether to modify the protective order that separates Sheen from Mueller.

Sheen and Mueller have both asked for the order to be modified. A judge put it in place after Sheen was arrested on two felonies and one misdemeanor on Christmas when Mueller called 911 and told cops that Sheen held a knife to her throat, choked her and threatened to kill her after she told him she wanted a divorce.

In 1996, Sheen was accused of viciously beating then-girlfriend Ashland. She charged he pulled her hair so hard she was slammed onto the marble floor of his home, knocked unconscious plus split her lip and needed seven stitches.

She also said he forced her to strip and get rid of her bloody clothes and said he would kill her if she told anyone. Sheen eventually pled guilty to criminal charges and settled Ashland's civil suit.

Ashland's attorney was Gloria Allred, who is speaking out now about the attempt to modify the protective order that separates Sheen from Mueller.

"I have grave concern for the current wife because of my client's (Brittany Ashland), allegations and the conviction," Allred told RadarOnline.com. "Given Mr. Sheen's history with women I would be concerned about modifying the protective order."

When asked if she had been in touch with the Aspen District Attorney handling the case, Allred said, "no comment."

EXCLUSIVE: Sheen's Wife Met With Divorce Lawyer

Sheen's 1997 criminal conviction was eventually expunged from his record.

Mueller is represented by Yale Galanter, who called the violent explosion "one bad night." She has allowed Galanter to support the motion by Sheen's attorney to modify the protective order so that husband and wife can be together.

But, as RadarOnline.com has reported exclusively, Mueller has already met with a divorce attorney and now she's looking for a payday from Sheen that far exceeds her prenuptial agreement.

Her testimony could send Sheen to prison for the Christmas incident. The fact that Sheen, an admitted substance abuser, has fallen off the wagon and is boozing again, makes it crucial that his attorneys gain Mueller's cooperation to minimize the damage.

And while Allred would not comment on the civil suit settlement reached between Ashland and Sheen, a source close to Sheen told RadarOnline.com that he paid out close to $1 million.

Really, Gloria Allred is an embarrassment to the legal profession. She latches on to ANY potential case & milks it.

At least Allred voiced her concern on the protective order being modified. Sheen needs to be surgically modified.

It amazes me that a man so violent as Sheen has been able to walk around doing whatever he wants all of this time, and be idolized by millions. And I wonder how many women he actually had harmed physically?

When child rapist Roman Polanski was arrested, the Hollywood elite stood in line to sign a petition supporting him. Now, wife beater Charlie Sheen heads back in to work. Hollywood really doesn't care about women or children at all.

The answer is simple: don't watch his tv show. Turn the channel. Don't watch any Sheen shows. Hollywood WILL get the messege.

I just don't get some people's attitudes about this. The law doesn't say that abuse is wrong *unless* you think the woman has less "class" than her abuser. Besides which, a man who abuses multiple women is hardly classy.

If he doesn't want to have to pay women, he shouldn't beat them or abuse them. Charlie is not some innocent guy being taking advantage of. In a fair world, he'd have to give all he owns to a shelter for abused women.

Too true. OJ had already put at least one women in ICU with multiple injuries long before he beat Nicole the first time. Until people start believing women when they report these men, it will keep happening this way.
