Letterman’s Alleged Extortionist Lived Above His Means

David Letterman’s alleged extortionist, Robert Halderman, was attempting to extort money from the talk show host due to financial problems according to police sources.
And it’s no surprise, according to court papers from 2007 it seems the CBS producer has always been living above his means, despite earning a hefty salary.
Halderman Allimony Dispute Papers
During a hearing to determine alimony for his two children with ex wife Patty Montet, Halderman had to list his salary and outgoings, and it looks like he earned a pretty penny from his gig at CBS.
Halderman lives in shabby neighborhood
The papers show Halderman earned $214k per annum, and in addition he received $18,000 non taxable payments from his then live in lover, and woman at the center of the Letterman scandal, Stephanie Birkitt.
Apparently, according to the papers Halderman is also in line for a 3% increase every year as stipulated in his four year contract with CBS. In addition it is stated that Halderman has a healthy 401k account with an estimated projected $1million.
After his alimony payments to his ex-wife Halderman still had a gross income of $150,000, with a mortgage payment of less than $1,000 per month.
Birkitt’s lawyers say that Halderman’s claims that he is struggling financially are down to “mismanagement and extravagant spending” and that his major expenses are not housing and food but credit card payments and repaying a loan to himself from his 401k.
At the time of the hearing Halderman’s credit card debt was to the tune of $40k, half of which represents cash advances.

When asked where all his cash goes to Halderman stated “I don’t know. My life costs money.”
In just two months Halderman spent $20,000 in a cash advance and put another $20,000 on his new credit card.
With spending like that it’s no surprise Halderman has financial problems.

he'll try to blame this on 'economical down swing' & he said "his life is expensive" ..if THAT'S the best defense he's got the they may as well just put him away & save the taxpayers a ton of $$$

With all those cash advances, and being that deep in debt with so little to show for it, I'll bet he's got some sort of drug habit. That's almost always the case when so much cash goes up in smoke.

It's very easy to take some fast cash, but it's not so easy to repay it back very often! Such guys must remember this.

If Letterman knows Birkitt talks about her ex's (so much so that he's mocking them in skits with her in them) he sure as hell shouldn't be surprised that this happened. I used to think Dave was smart....

His ex-wife lives here in Colorado . They divorced in 2004 and in 2007 he was ordered to pay her $6,800 per month in spousal (alimony) and child support until the year 2011 when the payments were to be reduced to $5,966 until May 2014.
