Old school heartthrob Johnny Depp hit New York City to promote his forthcoming crime drama Public Enemies, met with mobs of fans outside the studios of David Letterman's late night show on Thursday.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star dutifully signed autographs and greeted devotees, before hitting chic Italian eatery Da Silvano later that evening.

Public Enemies -- which also stars Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard -- opens July 1.
