The season 5 premiere episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8 set a new record for the TLC reality show.  An astounding 9.8 million viewers tuned in to see the battling Gosselins talk about the “trouble” in their marriage and their uncertain future.

Even the folks at the cable net are blown away with the numbers; viewership for the premiere was more than double last season’s average.  And what is good news for the Gosselins is bad news for the big four networks.  “Jon and Kate Plus 8” easily outdrew the two-hour season premieres of The Bachelorette on ABC and Dateline on NBC.
