Oprah Winfrey was just named 'Person of the Year' by the animal-rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals).

According to PETA president Ingrid E. Newkirk, Oprah has used her "powerful voice to defend those without one."

Oprah will also be receiving an award plague and letter of appreciation from the controversial group.

Among the past recipients of the PETA award were the founders of the San Francisco-based cleaning product company Method in 2006, and West Virginian Senator Robert Byrd in 2007.
