Christmas Day is traditionally one of the biggest movie-going days of the year, and there were a whole lot of upsets yesterday.

Defying expectations, Jennifer Aniston's Marley & Me, based on the big fat bestseller, took in a staggering $14.6 million on its opening day. In contrast, the critically lauded The Curious Case of Benjamin Button starring Jen's ex Brad Pitt came in with $11.8 million. And Adam Sandler's Bedtime Stories was number 3 with $10.5 million. Jen and Adam were competing for the same family audience.

Another disappointment yesterday was Tom Cruise, whose panned Valkyrie earned just $8.3 million. Jim Carrey's Yes Man took in a so-so $5.8 million its second week, and Will Smith's Seven Pounds was light a few lbs at $4.8 million in its second week.

But the biggest loser was Frank Miller (creator of the comic books 300 and Sin City). His superhero stinker The Spirit managed just $3.8 million.
