He's one of the few Mexican directors to find an international audience, but Hellboy helmer Guillermo del Toro told his countrymen that he has no plans to return and make a movie.
His decision stems from the kidnapping of his father 10 years ago.
"Not all of the people who participated in the kidnapping were captured," he told the newspaper El Universal.
Calling his life in New Zealand one of "forced exile," the Pan's Labyrinth director made the comments on the red carpet of a Mexico City showing of Rudo y Cursi, which he co-produced.
Next up for del Toro is directing the flm version of The Hobbit, the prequel to the Lord of the Rings films.
