It's Not So Bad Being John Edwards After All!

John Edwards may have ruined his political career by cheating on his dying wife and then repeatedly lying about it, but his speaking career has never been more robust. While wife Elizabeth has backed out of the couple's joint appearance at New York's Hofstra University next Monday (she's also kicked John out of their Chapel Hill home), Edwards is not only sticking to that gig but also being paid $65,000 to address the University of Illinois on October 14th.

Edwards' speech at Illinois will be titled "The American Dream," which would be funnier if his agent hadn't gone and claimed that he's actually charging more to speak now than before his affair with Rielle Hunter. (An aide—for some reason, he still has one of those—is denying the increase in speaking fees.)

Back in January of 2006, Edwards caught flack for pocketing $55,000 to deliver a speech at UC-Davis entitled "Poverty, the Great Moral Issue Facing America." By our math, that does indeed seem to be an 18% hike. Not that it's surprising that Edwards wasn't particularly forthright about something.

His speeches are focused on how men can better navigate midlife crises and get away with screwing around on their wives, always a popular topic guaranteed to bring in top dollar.

There is no way Edwards is making more money. As someone who knows the insides of speaker circuit I have heard from several event organizers that they know of people getting out of their contracts with Edwards for upcoming events. I know of 2 off hand...just dont know if they had to still pay him??
