< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Penelope Cruz's Iraqi Fashion Crusade
BAGHDAD LADY Cruz (Photo: Getty Images) Today, Mango, a Barcelona-based fashion brand which has collaborated with actress Penelope Cruz and whose ads feature the actress and her cleavage, announced that it will open a boutique in Abril, a Kurdish city in the north of Iraq. Mango, like its competitors H&M and Zara, is known for producing trendy, sometimes revealing clothes at a reasonable cost. But modest Abril-ite women and their male relatives can rest easy. Cruz's provocative ads for the chain are unlikely to be plastered across the store and designs will be selected to reflect local cultural sensibilities. Zuhair Murad, a Lebanese designer, has been commissioned by Mango to create clothes that won't be counter to traditonal Muslim values. According to WWD, tunics and billowy dresses will feature prominently, and the "issue of coverage" will be "dealt with through layers." Though the city of Abril has been relatively stable since a suicide attack in May 2007 left 14 dead and 87 wounded, Mango execs decided to forgo a scouting trip to the city, citing "safety concerns," and instead outsourced the task to business partners on the ground. The store will add to the chain's Middle Eastern portfolio, joining locations in Beirut, Amman, and Cairo, Egypt. Advertisement |
