Meet The Rest

KATIE? REALLY? Couric (Photo: Getty Images)
Because there are so very few jobs in print and television journalism to be had, everyone is making his list of who might replace Tim Russert as host of NBC's Meet The Press after Russert's sudden passing. Honestly, the names we're seeing so far are a little hacky and expected! (Oh, really: Katie Couric? No....) Russert had gone to NBC from politics in 1984 (a fine year as any for a Democrat to get out of the game) and took over Meet The Press in 1991. Also, there are so few Irishmen left who are willing to work themselves to death these days (blame the unions). So, further afield.

The Times comes up with Brian Williams (sure) and Andrea Mitchell (why not?) and then some of the MSNBC opinion-addicts like Chris Matthews and Joe Scarborough (haha, right). Or what about George Stuffin-envelopes, suggests the LA Times. Gag.

But this is the YouTube age. Ratings for Meet The Press will always top out below 5 million, more like in the 3 to 4 million range. The thing is—Bravo, an NBC Universal company, cranks out plenty of TV-friendly personages every year, and yet, surprisingly, and despite their civic-mindedness, so few of them wend their way into the D.C. bureaus of the major network. Oh! Or what about that young Tila Tequila? She's as canny as Couric and at least as smart as Scarborough, and at least as good on camera!

It'd be a stroke of genius if they'd continue with someone smart and intuitive.

Probably too much to ask.

No one will ever be able to replace Tim Russert. Someone may sit in for him, but never fill his seat. K.Couric would be an insult to his memory. Andrea Mitchell, Matt Lauer, maybe.

Andrea Mitchell? Ugh. Would be a worse choice than Couric. Matthews, too much of a clown.

Personally, I think Ron Paul and Ralph Nader should co-host, but I give that only about a 15% probability of happening.

I realize it's an erreverant little site you have here, but can't you show a little class. The line "there are so few Irishmen left who are willing to work themselves to death these days" was so unneccesary. We're all such a cynical lot, these days, but I believe TR was one of the true good guys that lived in a state of grace that few of us will ever achieve.

Show a little respect.

Juan Williams would be an extreme natural, Gwen Iffil would be another great.

I'd suggesst that NBC hire Luke Russert today and groom him to replace his father with help from Tom Brokaw, Brian Williams and Matt Lauer.
He's one cool and sharp young man

Listen, I am sorry that we lost one of the truly best News Gaint at such a early age. No one can really replace him, but there is no way that Katie is even in his league. His shoes will be hard to fill and I pray they take time and find someone that can step up to the plate.

No one was hired to replace Ed Bradley. The same should be true for Tim Russert. Rotating guest hosts might be a possibility. Katie Couric? Never.

First off, it would be a "sacrilege" if they put K-k-k-Katie (Couric) in Tim's spot! From day one, I would never watch it, I know that!

What about Pat Buchanan? We all love listening to his opinion, and there is that 'vetted' background, that not many others can begin to match! The political knowledge he just walks around with is 'bottomless' ~ he's of Irish descent (with a little of the English, Scots and some German mixed in) but the Irish *twinkle* is more prominent than anything else -- those 'smiling eyes' and that quick wit speaks to the Irish within, and draws us right in there with him! Besides all that, he'd be hard-hitting and forceful if need be, in interviews, (much like the 'master,' Tim Russert was) I think. What does everyone else think?

Or this -- how about trying out sort of an "A-List" of certain contenders to the throne, each having a month or so at the helm, and then keep them playing "musical chairs" until it would be evident who should be the favored one? Hmm-m?

I have been thinking about who would be a good replacement for Tim Russert. I agree with the poster that he would be very difficult to replace as he is a legend. I think having someone do this permanently right now would be awful for that person with everybody comparing them. I would like to see guest hosts for a couple of months and then someone permanently.

I like Katie Couric, but do not think she would be a good fit. The person I am liking more and more is Campbell Brown. She grew a lot on NBC, but really has blossomed on CNN. she is an excellent political reporter. the thing is, we need someone young. Russert was in his late 30s when he took this on. Campbell is young too and very smart. Just my thoughts...

Please, not Katie Couric. As a female I want to see woman break the glass ceiling, but I do not think she is capable of that job. Unfortunately, she made her bed on the Today show. She spent too much time being perky and bubbly and I don't think people can take her seriously now.

My vote is for David Gregory. I really like him, he is very good at getting the answers he wants and he strikes me as an intelligent guy.

No way on Matt Lauer, he is too arrogant.

Who cares! It really is disgusting to watch the media "self-worship" their way through the mourning of the death of Tim Russert. As is usually the case with the Main Stream, dinosaur media, it is always about them. You would think they were replacing a Pope.....watch someone will post after me that Tim Russert was the "Pope" of modern journalism.

I wonder if someone from NBC will ask someone from Iowa who they think should replace Tim, while their home floats down the Mississippi. Blah, blah, blah.

Posted by: blahblahblah on June 17, 2008 4:05 PM

OH GAWD! NO!!!! Please don't like that little cheerleader ruin a perfectly great show!!!!!

Posted by: topbearman on June 17, 2008 4:09 PM

Katie should have just stayed with Today until the perkiness factor wore out. People loved her there. She just doesn't have the "chops" for journalism as serious as "Meet the Press." Matt Lauer on the other hand would be a great choice. He isn't living up to his potential on Today.

Posted by: tiredmom on June 17, 2008 5:28 PM

Wish Couric all the luck in the world, but PLEASE don't kill a show with such a history as Meet The Press by putting in a lightweight like her!

Where's AARON BROWN? He'd be great!

This site has a depraved sense of humor. The over-hyped, over-saturated Couric brand took a path, sponsored by blind CBS execs, that I had predicted would fail. The online polls prior to her initial sign-on were so indicative of her future. I suggest all tv execs take heed...float the potential candidates' names to the public, BUT pay attention this time. Andrea Mitchell is a great choice among others.

It is impossible to replace Tim Russert. But, there are two journalist I think that would work just as hard as Tim to bring us the truth and have integrity. David Gregory and Anderson Cooper. Two journalist who I trust.

To BLAHBLAHBLAH,
Tim Russert was not the Pope, but he was a good man who did not flaunt his place on this Earth.

As for the floods and failure of the levees, you may want to place that blame on George Bush, who would rather spend trillions of dollars policing the world, than on our infastructure.

Lighten up. We live in a great country and it is what it is.
