OFFENDING FRUIT Ginkgo

Who says all the children of New York City have just gone limp with apathy? The New Yorker's Lauren Collins finds three who have become united in a campaign against the fruit of the ginkgo tree. The female ginkgo, for those not in the know, produces a fruit that smells a lot like, say, week-old semen with after-hints of baby diaper and 2 a.m. frat bar. Ten percent of trees in New York City, Collins notes, are ginkgos. But most of those aren't fruiting trees. Someone might tell these youngsters that their battle has already largely been won. The planting of female gingkos in New York City has been outlawed for years—the list of approved trees only includes the male tree.
