FUNNY STUFF Chicken skewers, rocket-propelled grenades
In a Hezbollah-supporting southern suburb of Beirut, restaurant owner Yousef Ibrahim is getting creative with the marketing of his Lebanese fare. At "Buns and Guns," Ibrahim is re-branding traditional favorites, turning, for example, the ordinarily harmless "chicken on a skewer" into the less-delicious-sounding "rocket-propelled grenade." Other menu items include "terrorist bread," the "RPG sandwich," the "Kalashnikov," the "Dragunov," the "Viper," and the "B52." The restaurant also features a Muzak-like soundtrack of gunfire (the better to chew RPGs to), military post decor, and the catchy motto "A sandwich can kill you." But Ibrahim says the only thing lethal about his sandwiches are their lethal portions. Ha! "My goal was to make people laugh before they ask me why weapons. The important thing is that they laugh," Ibrahim says, "They accuse us of terrorism, so let's serve terrorist bread, why not?" No word yet about possible Buns and Guns franchising opportunities.
