Donatella Versace Continues Political Pundit Work

Though earlier in the week a flack for Donatella Versace refuted the idea that Barack Obama had been the muse for the easily parodied designer's latest mens wear collection, telling Fashion Wire Daily that it was "not Obama himself" who had inspired the collection but rather just "the type of man Barack Obama represents.... A modern man with a laid back relaxed look/attitude," Donatella couldn't stop talking about Obama as inspiration on CNN this morning.

"I said wow, this is a man who inspires me for this collection because he's all about change and hope and to challenge the future," she told CNN via subtitles, even though she was speaking in English. (Which brings up an interesting philosophical debate: Is she hard to understand because she's Italian or because her lips are so over-pumped?)

Versace also called Obama "the image of the modern man." But the collection Obama inspired includes some less than presidential looks—man sandals, man bags, open collars, and shorts suits. Yeah. Precisely what the O Man needs to get those working class voters. This is about as helpful to his campaign as Reverend Wright. Donatella also offered some helpful advice to that less than modern man, John McCain.

"He's too constrictive in his clothes. He should loosen up a little bit," she said. Right. Note to Donatella: John tends to look a little stiff because he's way old, has arthritis, and can't lift his arms very high after breaking both of them in Vietnam and then spending five fashionable years in a prison camp there. Versace previously offered her ridiculous, unsolicited fashion advice to Hillary Clinton. Which was about as helpful.
