< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Col Allan and the Never-ending Thrillist Junket
Allan Portfolio's Jeff Bercovici is all indignant and asking Post editor Col Allan if the paper will reimburse Thrillist, which we hear isn't sitting well with Allan, who decided to express his displeasure by holding two stories written by the junketeers that were supposed to run on Tuesday. (We e-mailed and called Rubenstein PR for comment regarding Allan, but have yet to hear back.) Then there's the fact that some people who went on the trip are annoyed that they were outed by Rachel Sklar for attending. (Sklar notes that the event was not off the record, and that anyone identified in her article was made aware that she was a member of the press.) So pretty much everyone is pissed off except Thrillist, which made out like a bandit in terms of free publicity. Of course, Allan's anger is unjustified given that his reporters didn't actually commit an ethical infraction: one, a full-time employee, cleared the trip with his boss ahead of time and made it clear that he wasn't writing about the trip; the other, a freelancer, didn't have a contract and was thus under no obligation to clear anything. While the Post claims it has ratcheted up enforcement of house rules curtailing reporter freeloading, a source familiar with the paper's policies says that any changes are superficial at best: "In order for a writer at the Post to go on a junket, they must first formally e-mail their direct boss, who must then directly e-mail the Post's managing editor, who must then go straight to Col Allan himself for the okay," says the source. "There are no questions asked regarding the reporter's intent on writing about the free trip, the brand, or anything at all. They simply receive an e-mail that says 'Okay.'" Not exactly what you'd call due diligence. Bercovici, for his part, may want to direct some his ire in-house: a staffer at Vanity Fair, a publication owned, like Portfolio, by Condé Nast, was on the trip with the Post-ies.
