Family and friends are mourning the loss of Ruslana Korshunova, a young model who died Saturday after leaping from the balcony of her ninth floor apartment in the financial district of Manhattan. Her death has been ruled a suicide. She would have been 21 years old on Wednesday.

The young model from Kazakhstan was known as the "Russian Rapunzel" and "the Long Hair Goddess." She appeared on the covers of French Elle and Russian Vogue; modeled in campaigns for Marc Jacobs, Moschino, and many others; and walked the catwalk for Jill Stuart and Betsey Johnson.

"This is completely unexpected," her mother told the New York Post from Kazakhstan: "She's had her ups and downs but never anything that would lead to suicide." Recent online postings by the model reveal some level of distress. In a posting from March that now reads cryptically, she wrote, "My dream is to fly. Oh, my rainbow it is too high."
