Will Vito Fossella Campaign For Re-election From Jail?

What's going on with embattled Rep. Vito Fossella (R-NY), the Staten Island congressman whose recent DUI in Virginia came after a night of partying with an overserved pal and led to the revelation that he fathered the child of a woman other than his wife? Well, the congressman, last seen living above the garage at his sister's home, was out and about this weekend, stopping by a Conservative Party event on Friday and marching in a Great Kills Memorial Day parade on Saturday. Guess what? He wants to run for re-election!

Republicans, already facing a challenging election cycle, are predictably unthrilled, at least on the national level. Over on the Isle of Staten, there is "enthusiastic support" for the multiple-family having politician. Although that support is tempered with a bit of realism. Staten Island capo Guy Molinari's endorsement: "If he chooses to run, I think he can win. It would take an all-out effort and a substantial amount of money. But there are a lot of people pledging support for him."

Meanwhile, there's still that pesky DUI hanging over the congressman's head. The New York Daily News looks into the Alexandria, VA, jail Fossella might spend the better part of a week in if convicted. While the paper reports that the prison isn't any kind of luxury hotel, it is "a modern, 'new generation' jail with a national reputation—and it doesn't have any bars. Cell doors glide open electronically, and inmates spill out into common areas on four floors."

At the very least it sounds like an interesting change of pace from the garage.
