Jay-Z Explains His Vietnam Flashback

Jay-Z didn't wait for the Hamptons to be in full swing to throw a white party; he did it following Tuesday night's Madison Square Garden performance. The rapper turned up in a dapper white tux and stepped out of his Maybach. His bride Beyoncé (who wore black—for shame) skipped by the red carpet, denying the outside photographers a chance to shoot her, so Jay cat-called her himself. "Sweetie! Where you goin'? Lemme get that shot!" In the best of spirits and a killer bowtie, the rapper chatted with reporters about his choice in war imagery for his MSG concert residency.

Asked about the political footage that plays during his concerts, including Ernie Adams' infamous Vietnam execution photo and whether he picked the footage personally, Jay said, "Yeah of course [I picked it], it's my show." Why stop it before the shot is fired? "I didn't want to [show the execution]. We're there to have a good time so I didn't want to make it too heavy. I just wanted to touch on it a bit, so people get the idea and understand what I'm trying to say and then we can all move on. I didn't want to go so deep that everyone's in a bad mood. I didn't want to be depressing," the rapper said before flashing a smile and slipping inside.
