Seacrest Gives Michael Johns An Uncomfortable Screwjob

Last night's American Idol delivered its first true shock of the season with the elimination of ladies' favorite Michael Johns. An informal survey of friends and my mother shows a majority believes Johns' performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On" was far better than those of Syesha Mercado and Carly Smithson, who joined him in having the lowest vote tallies of the final seven. Host Ryan Seacrest delivered the blow, but only after a cruel insinuation that he might be safe—last year, you'll remember, the results show following Idol Gives Back gave one more contestant a second chance. Not until Johns' eyes lit up with a glimmer of hope, did Seacrest hand him his walking papers: "Sorry, Michael, your journey ends tonight." Smooth, Seacrest.

Johns' abrupt exit was also a shock on the heels news that TiVo executives have been accurately predicting who has been getting kicked off for the last month, based on their ability to see which performances are being forwarded through and what ones are being rewatched. Their best guess had Mercado getting the boot. Despite his obvious surprise, Johns handled his early departure with grace.

The show also featured the previously cut speeches of the three remaining presidential candidates, Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama, and self-styled jokester John McCain. They were as you might expect. The total amount raised on "Idol Gives Back" has reached $60 million, but with additional celebrity requests on last night's episode, that number is still growing.

Bonus performances came from Rhianna paramour Chris Brown and season six winner Jordin Sparks, who sang their new duet, "No Air." Thankfully, Teri Hatcher was nowhere to be found.

Idol's back on Tuesday with mentor Mariah Carey dispensing singing advice. Let the crazy begin!

This program is obviously fixed! Can we really believe the so-called voting system? Here is a talented singer who should either have been chosen as the American Idol or at least first runner up!

That is if honesty in the voting and talent has anything to do with this programs.

In contrast this no-talent dreadlock queen cannot sing! He/she has no talent. He was closer to Tiny Tim in his last performance with his ukulele. Any and all of the remaining contestants show far more talent than this girl-wannabe.

It is more than obvious that the demographics of this program are targeting 12 to q3 year old girls with the California valley girl syndrome.

I am deeply disappointed by what they are doing in the name of talent!

I could really give two poops about American Idiol, none of them are my idiol to be certain. I just think it's funny that anybody would care this much!? Professional karaoake as far as I' am concerned, talented don't get me wrong, but once again these people are not my idiol. It takes a lot more than a good voice for me to give someone that title. With all the issues concerning voting in this country I just think its laughable to see someone ( this means you entertainer) get so worked up about American Idiol. What about Flordia and the up coming election, there could be a voting issue there perhaps. Go take a prozac and simmer down. Too bad people can't get this excited about something that truly matters.

Ryan Seacrest is a CRUEL! What he did last night to Michael Johns totally crossed the line. There is no excuse for his behavior and he owes Michael Johns a public apology. They also should bring back the Wildcard setup in this case. Let him come back one night to sing, and if he doesn't get the top scores the next time, he'll be permanently eliminated.

Oh please what they did to that kid is hardly cruel.... its TV. Or have you not been paying attention to our blood thirsty way of exploiting peoples faults on national TV? This pales in comparison to shows like Moment of Truth or Temptation Island. You put yourself out there in the spot light and you risk getting burned? Does that make it ok? No, but you take that risk by putting yourself out there. Ryan Seacrest was doing his job, he's a puppet for the network and the network wants ratings. Sorry to burst your happy bubble America, but lets get real shall we?

Thank You bbcc - Ryan Seacrest was unprofessional and beyond cruel with the way he announced that Michael Johns was leaving the show, especially given the "Good-Will" theme for the night. He owes Michael Johns and AI fans a public apology. Thanks for the e-mail addresses, I for one will complain.
