WHAT SHAFRIR AND GROSE ARE GETTING God, I Hate Them SO MUCH
A mere month after a book based on popular website Stuff White People Like was sold to Random House for a rumored $350k comes word of another blog-to-print deal.
Postcards From Yo Momma, a website that runs user-submitted e-mails and chat transcripts from real moms, is being turned into a hardcover work of literature by the people at Hyperion, publishing next April. While actual numbers are unavailable, the site's creators, Brooklyn-based writers
Doree Shafrir (
New York Observer) and
Jessica Grose (
Jezebel), are said to have received a comfortable (if not as stratospheric as the
White People transaction) sum. And they deserve it! It's not everyone who can just open another e-mail account and then slap up the responses onto a free Tumblr blog and turn it into COLD HARD CASH while sitting around drinking Martinis and gossiping about boys. Bitches.
DISCLOSURE: The writer of this piece is friendly with Shafrir and Grose, both of whom worked at Radar at one point. The fact that he has prior relationships with the two should in no way be taken to indicate that he is INSANELY JEALOUS that they've turned a solid idea into BIG MONEY and furthermore does not suggest that he is currently weeping under his desk while wailing, "WHY NOT ME, GOD? WHY NOT ME?"
