< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Mexican Emo Violence Really is the Best Emo Band Name EverRemember that story about how emo-kids were being mistaken for piñatas and beaten half to death in the streets of Mexico? And how it was all a part of a growing anti-emo movement dead set on eradicating the crying scourge? Well, maybe it's not all it was cracked up to be. MTV sent their own Woodstein south of the border to investigate. They spoke with Kristoff, the TV host blamed with inciting the violence, who said "The anti-emo movement doesn't exist. The anti-emo movement is something that came out of the Internet, and I don't know where it continues. Here in Mexico, it doesn't continue." But the kids on the front lines beg to differ. Sugus and Lenny, a couple of emo kids from Mexico City, told MTV that Kristoff is to blame and that the threats and violence they endure at the hands of punks, goths, and metalheads is still very real. SinRage are some of those metalheads. Frontman and apparent sociologist Isaac explained the violence: "In the Mexican culture, everybody works. You could be a construction worker, but you work and try to get yourself ahead." Guitarist Abraham added, "If you have to be in your own culture or do your movement, you have to gain respect." It's all a very distressing situation. Something that might call for a silent protest by the emo-kids to register their complaints. Thing is, they tried that and it didn't work. "The silent march that they did here, I think it was a big 'kick me' sign," Abraham said. "Because you're telling everybody, 'Hey, don't hit me!' Well, what is everybody going to do? They're gonna come hit you." And there you have it. Philosopher Abraham sums up the entire conflict in three sentences.
