McCain's Tricky Hamas Kinship

Responding to Hamas' recent endorsement of Barack Obama, John McCain borrowed a line from fellow Vietnam vet John Rambo on Friday and vowed that he would be the Palestinian terror group's "worst nightmare" if elected president. It was red meat for the masses, but has McCain really thought about the impact of the tough talk on his own close adviser, Tom Loeffler? Like Hamas, Loeffler has received boatloads of cash from Saudi Arabia. In other words, if McCain tries to put the hurt on Hamas, he would have to address the fact that it's funded by the same people that pay his guy.

Moreover, busting on Hamas means pressing the House of Saud to crack down its own wealthy citizens who fund Hamas and possibly even on their own government-run charity which has been known to funnel payments to the families of Hamas suicide bombers.

Voila! It's the kind of problem that the Saudi government currently pays Loeffler millions of dollars to extinguish. Given Loeffler's status as the consigliere and money man who helped McCain's campaign survive its near-death experience in 2007, it's hard to imagine a lobbyist being better-positioned to succeed in this hypothetical situation suggested by McCain's tough-on-Hamas comments.

So in summary, let's hand it to McCain for having the huevos to hammer Obama for the unsolicited Hamas endorsement (and demand, on a separate issue, that Obama apologize for associating with some dude who was involved in the hippie terrorist movement decades ago). And kudos to Mac for pulling it all off while huddling with an advisor who, at this very moment, is a high-paid proxy for a country that is financing terrorist movements on a global scale. Because in politics, fortune favors the shameless!
