Last night on Hardball, Chris Matthews asked Barack Obama the question the whole country has been wondering: "What's it like to be a black kid with a white mom?" To his credit, Obama responded with a restrained and thoughtful explanation, rather than smacking Matthews across the face or shouting "Read The Color of Water, ya ignorant motherfucker," which is totally the way we would have gone. Later in the interview Matthews wonders what the Illinois senator thinks about "white chicks... I mean, would you do one?" Okay, not really, but not entirely out of the realm of possibility either. I started off this campaign season by sending money to the McCain organization. After reading Obama's stuff and now listening to him I am finding myself drawn to his camp. There is a quality of statesmanship which he exudes that I have not seen in a candidate in a long time. Add to that that he is saying clearly what I have felt about the Iraq war since its beginning. To me there is no issue more pressing than getting this idiocy over with and bringing our soldiers home. I lived through one Vietnam. I do not want to see my country immersed in a second one, and I am afraid that McCain is saying exactly what Nixon said at the start of his first term, and that led to four more useless years of killing and dying.
Most people are so consumed with what they want to buy, what they have that their neighboors don't, or what is going on in Britney Spears life that they don't know just how terrible the war is. I feel that Senator Obama will bring the change that our country so desperately needs. Now, my worry is, will enough people care enough to vote for him over the status quo.
