Sony Execs Try, Fail to Kill 'Will Smith is a Crazy Scientologist' Story

INCONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE Cruise, Smith (Photo: Getty Images)
As we reiterated yesterday, our April Scientology cover story does not make the case that Will Smith is a Scientologist, even though MSNBC used it to buttress their claim that "the actor is definitely becoming a member of the religion." MSNBC has its own sources for that, which is now apparently causing a whole slew of different problems for Sony, the studio behind the I Am Legend star's summer offering, Hancock.

Sources tell Defamer that Sony execs, fearing Smith's dabbles with the quasi-religion will spell box office disaster for Hancock the way avowed Scientologist Tom Cruise's bizarre pre-release publicity blitz hurt Mission: Impossible 3, tried to get MSNBC to kill the item, though MSBC declined to do so. According to Defamer, it was also Sony that forced Smith to issue his "I'm a Christian" denial, which sort of pissed off Smith's real Scientologist friends, especially since Smith, in the tradition of Scientologists far and wide, has made a habit of giving the Church fistfuls of monies.

Smith at least seems to be playing ball (for the time being) with Sony, unlike Cruise, whose erratic behavior eventually caused the dissolution of his lucrative production agreement with Paramount. We're sure Sony execs will politely remind Smith to refrain from jumping on couches during the inevitable Oprah stop, though.

Comments

"I am a Christian" is *not* a denial of being a scientologist. Scientologists, at the lower levels anyhow, believe that they can be both a Scientology AND a Christian at the same time.

Further, the quote says, "I am a student of all religions." By that definition, one would be a student of Scientology, would they not?

I see nothing in that article that denies Will Smith being a Scientologist. In fact, if anything, it seems to bolster the claim?

Neither Will Smith nor any other individual owes the world an explanation of their religious beliefs. He seems to be a very sensible guy. If he chooses to be a Scientologist, Buddhist, Hindu, Jew or whatever, that is his business. This whole thing is a red herring egged on by gossips for no good reason.

Will Smith is in the early stages of being converted. In this stage, Scientology is nothing more than a form of psychotherapy or "confessional".

So Will Smith can in deed believe he is a Christian and a Scientologist.

"things that have made this movement so controversial," says S. Scott Bartchy, director of the Center for the Study of Religion at UCLA, "are its claims that its forms of therapy are 'scientific' and that the 'truth' will only be revealed to those who have the money to purchase advancement to the various levels."

In fact, it's not until the upper levels that the "Church" tells you that all other religions, including Judaism, Islam and Christianity are all implants forced upon our souls ( thetan ) by aliens. You are told to believe this and nothing else.

Scientology's affirmation that anything written by L Ron Hubbard is the true and definitive word is at the root of all of this. It can not be altered or disputed. If he says that there was no Jesus Christ... then you must believe him or you'll never get across the Bridge of Total Freedom.

Will Smith won't find this out for some time.

To Will and Jada Smith:

You are being used by cruise and scientology.

I know it doesn't seem that way to you but its true.

Scn has used celebrities in the past and will continue to do so if allowed.

Take care and good luck - A former scientologist.

This scientology witch hunt is reminscent of the black list days. Why does it matter what a screen actor believes in - communism, democracy, scientology, christianity or otherwise? This is evidence that our open-mindedness of the 60's has clearly subsided and given way to the conformity of the 50's.

Unfortunately Scientologists put blinders on celebrities, so all they see is glitz and glamour. They don't see the child labor, they don't see the secret prisons in the RPF, they don't see the people who are being harassed by Scientology's secret police.

In response to bpeele:

FLUNK

If anyone's doing witchhunts it's the Cult of Scientology. Or do you not know about the OSA and the various private investigators being hired by the Cult? Wow this sounds like a peaceful religion! Repeat the operating word please

So, Will Smith is a Christian who is "interested" in a religion like Scientology?
I guess he has not yet paid to read the "secret upper level scriptures" where L Ron Blubbard reveals that Christianity is an "implant" and Jesus was a "lover of young boys"
When he does read that - if he has not been completely brainwashed to the point of lunacy like his friend Tom Cruisazy, he will run away as fast as he can.
But, alas, if the ScientoloBrainwash is complete, he will have a "great cognition" that L Ron Blubbard is truly the messiah and the "only friend of mankind" and will "F/N" on the E-Meter while saying that.
Then he and Tom Cruisazy can stop for accidents together because they are "the only ones who can help"
With Cruisazy's help, there will be "KSW" = Keeping Smith WACKO
