< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Meet Roger Stone, the 'Sleaziest Man in American Politics'
LIKES TO BONE Roger Stone Anyway, in the letter he may or may not have sent to the FBI last year, Stone (credited with blocking the 2000 presidential recount in Florida) gleefully notes that Spitzer preferred not to "remove his midcalf-length black socks during the sex act," which is actually the most mentally disturbing detail we've heard yet in a scandal filled with disturbing mental images. Giving his claim a bit of legitimacy is the fact that he boasted to conservative radio host Michael Smerconish that Gov. Spitzer "wouldn't serve his full term" on December 6th. Stone claims he caught wind of Spitzer's hooker habit from a friend who worked in the Miami sex business, but has declined to elaborate further. One thing is for certain: Stone certainly has motive for taking Spitzer down. While working as a consultant for avowed Spitzer nemesis and New York Senate majority leader Joe Bruno in August, Stone left a menacing, profanity-laced voicemail for Spitzer's father Bernard, who has Parkinson's disease. He quickly denied doing so, bizarrely claiming that he was at a performace of Frost-Nixon at the time the message was left (no performance was actually scheduled that day), but was forced to resign. Bruno, for his part, is no doubt reveling in the New York Times story today which notes that state officials are now investigating whether the testimony Spitzer gave to Congress on February 14th was simply pretext for his February 13th rendezvous with Ashley Dupre. Back in July, Spitzer came under heavy criticism for using State Police officers to see if Bruno had been improperly using state aircrafts to shuttle back and forth from Republican fund-raising events. The former governor flew to Washington on a state-owned Beechcraft B300; if it's decided that his trip was "principally a personal excursion," he'll have to reimburse the state.
