< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence If Katie Couric Wants To Host A Debate She's Going To Have To Pay For It Herself
I COULD AFFORD IT, BUT STILL Couric (Photo: Getty Images) The writers' strike, an argument with the DNC over where a debate was to be held, the ill-timed maternity leave of CBS political director Molly Levinson, "scheduling difficulties," and the network's limited financial resources (they already pay Couric $15 million a year, remember) were all reasons why CBS was forced to pull the plug on one debate or another. But the Observer also intimates that CBS execs may not have been comfortable with their high-profile, ratings-challenged anchor hosting a debate in the first place. CBS Network head Sean McManus says that the one debate Couric was in the running to host was to be an in-studio affair with no live audience (read: low budget) in which Katie was to act "as a facilitator more so than as a moderator." Not exactly a prime-time showcase for your number one asset. "When it comes to politics, they're not putting their money where their mouth is with Katie," says one TV veteran. And how's Couric handling it all? "She's an anchor," says Mr. McManus. "Anchors are always disappointed when they don't get much." Advertisement |
