< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Boondocks Bitchslaps B.E.T.A banned episode of The Boondocks containing a hilarious and scathing satire of Black Entertainment Television's contribution to "the destruction of black people" has surfaced on the Internet. [UPDATE: And now it's de-surfaced. If you didn't get to see it, it was totally hysterical. This is why you should be reading Radar 'round the clock. Anyway, read on, there are still some good points about B.E.T. and stuff.] It's no secret that African Americans have been disappointed in recent years with the content featured on what used to be the premier black network. Although BET's primary source of ratings in its glory days was music video shows, diverse programming such as Teen Summit and BET News (featuring NPR's Tavis Smiley, former 60 Minutes correspondent Ed Gordon, and talk-show host Bev Smith) provided the network with a much needed balance of news, culture, and information. That has now been replaced by inane reality shows and non-stop bling and cooch videos. CEO Debra L. Lee, responsible for the current state of programming, recently came under fire for both an unholy alliance with McDonald's and for airing the controversial "cultural awareness" program We Got To Do Better. Called "Debra Lee'vil" in the episode, Lee has the privilege of uttering one of the funniest punchlines: "Accomplish what hundreds of years of Jim Crows and malt liquor couldn't". Is that a wake up call we're hearing? Advertisement |
