Most freshly divorced heads of state would choose to keep their romantic escapades under wraps, but not French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who took his new girlfriend on a state visit to Egypt over the holiday. Just weeks after Sarko was snapped on a date with model Carla Bruni at Disneyland Paris, he brought her on an official trip to Egypt where he met with President Hosni Mubarak. The insta-couple were photographed looking googly-eyed as they took in the pyramids at Luxor and were also seen in fetching swimwear on an Egyptian beach. In both instances they appeared to welcome the presence of the paparazzi.
The fact that Sarko brought his girlfriend, an avowed polyamorist, to the conservative Muslim country was not lost on the locals. Egyptian lawmaker Gamal Zahran was so incensed by the inappropriate visit and the news that Sarko and Bruni had shared a hotel room, that he told the country's parliament that, in his view, Egypt's complicity in the visit suggested the country was "ready to accept official prostitution by heads of state."
The cranky French press has already suggested that Sarko and Bruni are merely an attractive smokescreen to distract the nation from the president's political fumblings. Though if it turns out not to be an imaginary relationship, the Sarkozy's looking just a tad too eager, isn't he? Frankly Sarko, when you're showing off to your world-leader buddies on the second date, you look kind of desperate.
