Upon hearing of the death of their son, actor Heath Ledger's family released a statement on Australian television: "We, Heath's family, confirm the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda," said Heath's father, Kim Ledger. An initial autopsy has proved inconclusive, and Ledger's family maintains that his death was not a suicide.

No note was found on the scene and the prescription drugs in Ledger's apartment suggest an accidental overdose. TMZ is reporting that Ledger had been suffering from pneumonia, perhaps the reason for the arsenal of pills discovered near his body by police. The sleeping pill Ambien was found in the apartment, as was the antidepressant Zoloft and the antianxiety drug Xanax. The NY Post is also reporting that a bottle of Donormyl, an antihistamine used as a sleep aid, and a packet of the drug Zopiclone, for insomnia, were found on the star's nightstand. ABC News says police also found a bottle of Diazepam (Valium) prescribed in Ledger's name.

Ledger was not found in Mary-Kate Olsen's apartment, as first reported, but rather in a $23,000-per-month SoHo luxury loft he had been renting for a few months. Neighbors say the place was only partially furnished and that the bed Ledger was found naked and face-down on was just a mattress on the floor. Ledger's housekeeper discovered the body at 3:31 p.m., after he failed to come out of his room for a massage appointment. Reportedly, she called the police while the masseuse called the Olsens' bodyguard, who is an EMT and with whom she is friendly. The housekeeper said she'd heard Ledger snoring in the apartment around 12:30 p.m.

Ex-girlfriends have been rocked by the news. Onetime fiancée and mother to his daughter, Michelle Williams, is said to be devastated. (Williams left Sweden this morning to return to New York—she had been filming a movie.) Former girlfriend Naomi Watts has pulled out of all Sundance engagements for her upcoming film Funny Games after learning of his death, and party pal Lindsay Lohan was spotted weeping in her car upon hearing the news.

Jack Nicholson, who once claimed to be furious that Ledger was taking over the role of the Joker in the upcoming Batman movie, supposedly said last night in London about Ledger's death, "I did tell him." But, these are the sorts of things publicists exist to retract/clarify.

Some of Ledger's, uh, friends have come forth, saying they saw it coming. "Heath has gone though a rough road of trying to get sober," a friend told us tells Us. "Things were very dark," the source says. "His one joy was Matilda."
