To the private amusement of his fellow Republicans in Congress, who generally regard him as a whiny liberal, Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) almost lost his congressional seat in the 2006 election because his Connecticut constituents thought he was too closely aligned with the Bush administration. Which means it was probably a bad idea for him to kiss President Bush on national TV at last night's State of the Union speech (clip above). Shays should have known better—Connecticut lefties went ape-shit (that is, wrote many sanctimonious blog posts) when Sen. Joe Lieberman had his own dangerous liaison with el presidente at the 2005 State of the Union.
