< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Claw Your Way Up the Lady-Mag Ladder![]() IMMACULATE ASCENSION Min (Photo: Getty Images) The topic of choice for the evening was "What Nobody Tells You About Being Editor-in-Chief," a panel gab-fest with Min, Glamour's Cindi Leive, and CosmoGirl!'s Susan Schulz. Despite the night's many adversities, we did manage to eke out a few shreds of substance. Most of the editors, for example, are skeptical about new media, particularly this ghastly thing the kids call blogging. "Everybody says print is dead," said Schulz. "It's so annoying to me." And, like your mom trying to elbow in on this newfangled social networking thing, Min confessed she was scared when she heard that there was a Facebook group for her employees. "I wondered, would they be bummed if I invited myself?" Even with their years of experience, panelists were guarded and a little put off when discussing ambition and climbing the corporate ladder. One admitted (or maybe lied), "I've never had a plan—I don't believe in having a plan. If you're good at what you do, success will find you," prompting Essence Managing Editor Dawn Baskerville to ask, "Are you kidding?" We asked Star phenom Julia Allison to explain why these women were reluctant to show their claws. As she put it: "For these women success does come naturally, but they're probably underplaying how much of an effort they put in to gain their skills. They have dream jobs and they underplay not how much they worked, but what it takes to get there. You learn techniques to make sure people don't call you a bitch." Thanks, Jules. Now, go steal Janice's job! Advertisement |
