UNICEF Paints it Blackface

unicef4_fresh.jpg
NEIN, DANKE UNICEF campaign
What do you get when you gather a group of adorable blond German kids, use mud to paint them in blackface, and then slap the pictures all over Deutschland? Lots of pissed off liberals for starters.

UNICEF Germany is the offending organization behind these PSAs showing "four German kids who appeal for solidarity with their contemporaries in Afrika." Originally meant to draw attention to Africa's education crisis, the ads have been pulled following public outcry.

We can only imagine the meeting in which this campaign was conceived.

Ad Man 1: "What better way to relate to African children and call attention to their plight than by smothering our kids' faces in mud?"

Ad Man 2: "How about reducing its entire population to dirty, neglected tots?"

Together: "Ja!"

First of all, not a one of them is really a blond and certainly NOT an Aryan blond. What is there to be offended about? Get over it folks... there are real problems in the world, white kids in black face is not one. Making a ridiculous stand about such a harmless subject is not going to erase the late 30's and 40's. Sorry.

Sense of humour? Ridiculous stand?
I'm confused.
This is a badly executed ad, and baffling in its badness. Saying so doesn't constitute a ridiculous stand. And the ads were not meant to be humorous; they were meant to call attention to a serious issue. I mean, does anyone think it's funny when children anywhere can't go to school and therefore have no future?

If, in calling attention to a cause, an ad trivializes that very issue and offends the very population they are purportedly trying to help, they're not good ads.

I never understand why, when it comes to race, folks get defensive when something clearly ill-advised is called out as such. Can't we just accept that it's idiotic and move on?
