< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Gordon Ramsay's No Fatties Edict![]() DADDY DEAREST Ramsay He should know. His eight-year-old daughter, he reveals oh-so sensitively, has been made fun of in school for her weight. Ramsay's extreme stance on parents (like himself) is just one nugget in a stew of contradictory, ill-considered, and downright dangerous advice that seems odd in a feel-good, self-actualized, six-pack abs lifestyle mag. The chef goes on to suggest "shock tactics" to frighten children out of overeating. "Supersize Me scared the hell out of my children. You have to scare them like that to make them understand it's not good for you," he says. Never mind that doctors say that will backfire. "If parents take an overly controlling attitude toward losing weight, children will find themselves pushed into stealth tactics: sneak eating, overly large portions, or eating outside the home," says Dr. Dana Rufey, a psychologist at the Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh Weight Management and Wellness Center. Enter Ramsay's wife, Tana, who has offered an equally unlikely but capitalistically brilliant solution to child obesity: veggie flavored ice cream. It comes in pea, carrot, broccoli, lettuce, and tomato flavors. Tana hopes to "make vegetables more attractive to kids" and clearly she has a personal affinity for cabbage. She might want to steer clear of her hubby with that talk, though. He recently hosted on his show the UK girl group Girls Aloud, who are vegetarians. "Girls Aloud really needs to eat," he said. "[singer Cheryl Cole] came onto the show and she is so skinny, it's a fucking disgrace. I really want to feed those girls and make them forget all about that vegetarian rubbish." In terms of vegetarianism in his own family, Ramsay's reaction is just as visceral. He says he would "stick [his children] on an electric fence" if they ever joined the tofu set. Advertisement |
