Vogue's Shape Issue is a Bit Thin

HEAVY TOPICS Johansson in Vogue
Did Jennifer Hudson fill the fatty quota for Vogue this spring? After putting the Oscar winner on their cover in March, the magazine bravely faced its annual Shape issue. This year, "curvy" Scarlett Johansson got the cover slot (other "shapely" April alumns include Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston). But while the magazine usually musters fawning profiles of plus-size women like chef Nigella Lawson or social doyenne Marjorie Gubelmann, this year the pages are largely dedicated to helping women with other "challenging" (read: sample size) physiques find clothes.

Take "athletic" Dwana Smallwood, the size 2 Alvin Ailey dancer; or marathoner Paula Radcliffe, who, at 7 and a half months pregnant had added a scant 21 pounds to her frame and was still jogging up hills in Monaco like a sherpa. Then there's "thin" supermodel Paulina Porizkova, who allegedly has football player-size shoulders. "Whenever there is a cap sleeve," she confesses, "I look insane." Or "tall" tennis babe Maria Sharapova, who now has notorious fatty-hater Rachel Zoe as her stylist.

Chubby chasers will have to dig deep in this issue to find evidence of flesh. Plus-size models Ashley Graham and Crystall Renn make cameos (blink and you'll miss them), while oversharing scribe Ayelet Waldman leaves us with an excruciating image that will likely make most readers think twice before they eat, or, god forbid, procreate. "My stomach, always a little rounded, now flops over the waistband of my jeans like a fallen souffle.... Four babies, four C-sections. It's no wonder the skin on my stomach is as stretched out as a shar-pei's."
