Sex So Real, It's Definitely Fake

GENUINE? Miller
As gossip columns duke it out—and News Corp. battles with itself—over whether or not the allegedly steamy sex scenes in Factory Girl are the result of real on-set intercourse between Sienna Miller and Hayden Christensen, it's important to remember that we've been here before. It's almost a marketing cliché to claim that the sex scenes in mainstream movies are so hot they just ... might ... be ... real.

After the jump, a selection sexy, spurious spin.

Wild Orchid, 1990
Alleged Lovers: Mickey Rourke and Carré Otis: "[Rourke] felt he could best extract a good performance from Carré in her first role by making everything as real as possible. It's the extreme passion and sincerity of their key scene that carries it; to cut it would cut into the film's integrity."—Producer Mark Damon, quoted in the St. Petersburg Times, February 9, 1990

Eyes Wide Shut, 1999
Alleged Lovers: Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman: "THE RUMOR: Cruise and Kidman get—how shall we say it—intimate onscreen. THE TRUTH: ???? Our mouths are wide shut on this one. You'll have to go see for yourself."—Richard Schickel, Time, July 5, 1999

Reindeer Games, 2000
Alleged Lovers: Ben Affleck and Charlize Theron: "It looked like real sex.... It wasn't pretty. We're falling all over the place. A lot of times we had no idea if the cameras were even rolling because the [crew] was laughing so hard."—Theron, quoted in Entertainment Weekly, February 18, 2000

Original Sin, 2001
Alleged Lovers: Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie: "These are the mind-blowing sex scenes superstar Angelina Jolie hoped the world would never see. And Antonio-oh-oh Banderas may well be sleeping on the couch when his missus Melanie Griffith sees them ... Because his wild 10-minute romp with Angelina—shot for flick Original Sin—was so realistic it ended up on the cutting-room floor ... However the News of the World got hold of the footage and now movie buffs-and Antonio's wife-are desperately trying to work out if they were at it for real ... Last night, Mel wasn't available for comment, but our captions show what she might be thinking ... A source close to her said: 'Who wants to see their husband have sex with another woman? Yes, it's a movie, but it looks like they're really doing it.'"—The News of the World, December 12, 2004
