Gucci's Ski-Themed Collection a Total Yard Sale

SHOW BUNNY Gucci
Abnormally sensible, Milan fashion week may have been just fine for conservative department store buyers, but not for Gucci designer Frida Giannini. Her ski-slope inspired menswear collection was an Italian bombing unseen since Zara in '43.

New York Times Style section critic Guy Trebay did the most damage in his review on Sunday, calling Ms. Giannini a "stylist," because "designer," he said, is probably not the right word. (Ouch.)

As if the s-word alone wasn't enough of a blow, Trebay goes on to say that "uncomplicated and kittenlike" Giannini makes Tom Ford seem "like some tortured soul at a Judith Butler seminar." (The fur boots indeed were dim-witted.)

The finale of this very public hanging is the paragraph where Trebay claims that the presentation "was not a fashion show at all" and goes on to compare it to an inane TV show from the '70s. Trebay's coup de grâce: "Everybody really does look sort of groovy in zillionaire ski bum clothes."

Something tells us he won't be all that welcome at the women's Gucci show in February—or at any ski resort anytime soon.
