Al's Said and Done at Air America?

SIGNING OFF Franken
The future senator from Minnesota may finally be giving up on Air America Radio—or what's left of it. A knowledgeable radio source tells Radar that Al Franken is leaving "before the end of the year."

That's 23 days and counting. As it happens, Franken is set to leave on a USO tour of Iraq and Afghanistan next week, from which he will return on Christmas Eve. Asked if he has made a decision to give up on the bankrupt network he helped launch in 2003, Franken played coy. "I don't know what's happening," he tells Radar. "It's not set in stone—I need to see what they're talking about."

"They" would be Air America's current management, which is desperately trying to sell the network out of bankruptcy. (Among the creditors: Alan Franken, Inc., which is owed a whopping $360,749.98, according to court documents.) Today marks the deadline, set by the bankruptcy court, for Air America to either arrange a sale or be considered in default on the $2.6 million loan that has kept it afloat since it filed for bankruptcy in October. (That deadline has been extended twice before for lack of a ready buyer.)

According to two sources familiar with the negotiations, Air America is in the final stages of arranging a sale to a small media company, which they declined to name. "My understanding is that everything is done except for the final touches," says one former Air America staffer. "It's a media company—a very small one. I had never heard of it."

Both sources expressed doubt that the new owner could afford to employ Air America's two biggest names—Franken and Randi Rhodes. "There's the question of whether this little company has the money to keep it going," says one source.

"There's no way that their current contracts will continue," says the former staffer. "And the question is, will Franken and Rhodes compromise in order to stay?"

Franken insists he's not paying attention to the turmoil—"I'm Zen-ing it," he says—and he's focused on his upcoming USO tour. And what will he do when he returns? "Fall asleep on the couch." And after that? "I don't know."

Air America played a bigger part in getting the dems back in control of the country than most people would admit to. I love Al Franken, but he can do much more as a Senator than a talk show host. Has AA lost money? Yes, it has-- but a paltry amount compared to what Fox News initially lost (for years) as well as the Washington Times, which is still losing money. If AA doesn't survive, at least they were a giant springboard for progressive radio. There are many stations now airing the Young Turks, Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Tom Hartmann, etc. Why? There's always a market for the truth.

While it may be true that AAR helped the dems when back congress, the greatest failure of this network was their refusal to address the inconsistencies surrounding the events of 9/11.

I personally sent dozens of e-mails to all AAR host begging them to at least "discuss" this issue. Some did such as Mike Malloy and Jeaneane Garafolo... they were both "let go".

Randi Rhodes would tip toe around the issue (which is better than nothing I guess). Others, such as Rachel Maddow, Sam Sedar and Al Franken refused to go anywhere near it.

Ultimately, I think this was their biggest failure. Had 9/11 occurred in the exact same manner, except under the Clinton administration, is their any doubt that the right-wing blowhards would have gone after Clinton ferociously.

Ultimately I don't think this is a matter of left vs. right, its a matter of truth vs. lies. The great thing about the truth is, it withstands inquiry. Its a shame Air America Radio never thought the truth of 9/11 was worth pursuing.

I agree with Chris Rose. Most hosts are a little too careful IMHO. Just like the Dems not considering impeachment without even investigating first. It's a shame and cowardly. The L.A. affiliate went to a Kings or Clippers game on ELECTION NIGHT! How does that make any sense? The "left" is just as much to blame as the "right" as long as the true issues are not discussed.

C'mon people! Al Gore won the popular vote with 49,000,000 (Forty-nine MILLION) voters in 2000... and six years later, despite ALL the outrages and atrocities of the Bush-GOP-co,, we "liberals" and Dems have NO media outlet that can be reliably counted on to carry our voices, hopes, and demands for relevant information?

This is the most PATHETIC situation I have ever seen! Of course the top-tier Democratic "leaders" - the Bidens and Kerrys and Bayhs and leibermans and even Hillary - are more interested in talking with big donors than they are with fighting the pay-to-play donor-lobbyist machine. (See any of Dave Sirota's posts, either at his own blog or at HuffingtonPost.com.)

But also don't forget... IT WAS THE NADERITES and "GREENS" who helped 'give" us this Bush-GOP nightmare government! I consider Nader criminally negligent for not going to Texas with a video camera to highlight (then Gov. Bush's) atrocious environmental policies, but the bottom line is that the Nader-Greens PREFERED to bash Gore than go after the all-too-clear record of GWB, so not only were 49,000,000 Americans DISENFRANCHISED by the Supreme Court (et al) in 2000, but six years later it is ONLY the gross incompetence and corruption of the Bush-GOP which unites "the left."

I don't go for a minute for those "planted explosives" stories about 9-11, which, as usual (like Greenies complaining about some damn fish Gore didn't do enough to protect) DISTRACT from the obvious scandal, Bush prefering Republican partisan_photo-op_FUNDRAISERS in the summer of 2001 to paying attention to CIA, FBI, DIA, (which ran a simulated airplane crash into the Pentagon), Egyptian secret police, Italian police, et al warning that Al Qaida wanted to hijack a US airliner. In this case the "conspiracy fringe" is trying to DETRACT from the plain-jane obvious scandal, with their overinflated hype about planted explosives, but more generally, the liberal/Dem side of the media message ALWAYS gets waylaid and derailed, either by the left, the right, or the inability to make mundane issues (like prescription drugs for seniors) exciting enough to pay attention to. (By comparison, the Limbaugh/Fox 'news' Righties are ALWAYS primed to HATE someone or something, and RIghty talk-radio and TV just keeps them humming along in tune and in time.)

As for any doubts that "planted explosives" brought down the towers, don't take my word for it. Do your research. Start by googling WTC7.

The truth withstands inquiry.

You're all full of shit. Air America failed because the left already has taxpayer subsidized radio-NPR. As for your phyrric electoral victory, either the moderate voices that supplanted republicans will prevail or your majority will fail because of your inability to honestly grasp reality.

Posted by: raceboats4fun on December 10, 2006 11:11 PM

That is rich! The left's "inability to grasp reality". Spoken like a true neocon. Can you say "Iraq war"? And for those of you saying the dems ought to impeach Bush, by the time the paperwork got filed, he'd be out of office. Even if they were able to get Bush impeached, which I believe there is a plethora of evidence supporting this--you're then left with Cheney, who would pardon Bush and then what?

For the 9/11 conspiracy bunch, I agree -investigate away, but to what ends? I'd like to see photos of a jet hitting the Pentagon, or a good clean explanation of why WTC7 went down, but it will never happen. If we can't even determine who assasinated a president how can we get court worthy info on 9/11? Will there be investigations by John Conyers, et el? Of course! Maybe it will help raise the citizenry's conciousness of these events, but don't expect any cut and dried explanations or jail terms.
