< BACK TO Fresh Intelligence Spy Poisoning Linked To Russian Journo Murders?![]() LINKED? Litvinenko, Klebnikov Could the two cases really be one and the same? Behar doesn't discount that possibility. "One of the theories we've been operating under is that there may well be commonalities in the murders of the dozen reporters who've been killed since [Russian president] Vladimir Putin came to power." Putin is slated to step down next year, but Behar has no expectation that things will suddenly improve for the Russian press. "I think some things are going to change before then, in terms of how Washington deals with Russia. The Klebnikov case is beginning to get more attention in Congress and the Senate. "You have to keep in mind that from the perspective of most Russians, poll after poll, they're satisfied with Putin, and they'd rather have strong government than a free press. So they're not exactly sure what they're missing." Behar is hoping to draw some attention to the issue by hosting a conference on the killings next spring in Moscow, to be attended by investigative reporters both Russian and Western. He is clearly expecting plenty of scrutiny from Russian security services. "We're looking at it as a series of private and public conversations about the murders," he says. "A lot of what takes place during those two days won't be public—it'll be conversations with people in hotels rooms and walking down the street, discreetly." Discretion notwithstanding, Behar isn't worried about his own safety as he seeks to bring justice to people who clearly aren't afraid to kill reporters. "I'm always careful, but I don't go about living in fear. If I did, I wouldn't be an investigative reporter, or shouldn't be." Besides, he says, "Our stated goal is not to solve the murder. Our goal is to keep a fire burning under the case, keep moving the ball forward, and also to light a fire under the kind of reporting Paul was doing when he was killed. In the sense that you can kill the reporter, but you can't kill the reporting. That message has to get through." Advertisement |
