STILL IN THE RED Black
• Lunchtime scandal read: Get to know a "plutocrat who stands accused as a kleptocrat," Daily Telegraph owner, dollar bill ironer, and obsessive Napoleon fan Conrad Black, who now faces a fraud trial and prison time for allegedly skimming millions from his company to pay for things like a Rolls-Royce Silver Wraith with purple interior, "like the Queen's," as he reportedly described it. The Times of London has his slow-mo trainwreck story complete with potential diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, rumored suicide attempts, conversations with God, and delicious money-grubbing e-mail exchanges between Black and his billionaire buddies.
• Dooced in Darfur: Heather Armstrong and Nadine Haobsh aren't the only people who've imperiled their careers with their personal blogs. Add to the list United Nations envoy to Sudan Jan Pronk who finds himself—and the U.N.'s team—with 72 hours to vacate the country after comments about Darfur were posted on his personal blog. "There have been a number of discussions with Mr. Pronk regarding his blog and the expectation of all staff members to exercise proper judgment in what they write in their blogs," said Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan
• Checking in with friends: Daily Intelligencer says that party crasher Priyantha Silva has expanded his empire. Not only has he been accused of impersonating editors at Condé Nast, now he's allegedly impersonating editors at Hearst. Hearst's security force responds with an interest in him, in kind.
• TV or not TV?: Time magazine takes some shots at a soon to be released study out of Cornell University that ties autism to the television watching habits of young children. This comes a week after Slate's Gregg Easterbrook excitedly reported the findings. Time helpfully provided Easterbrook with some space for a rebuttal. At least he didn't blame the findings on Jewish scientists who "worship money above all else."
