Talk of the Tents

WALK OF SHAME Paris at Heatherette
• ... You'd probably lie low for a few days if you'd just been popped for drunk driving. And if you opted not to—if, say, you'd promised to walk the runway for a designer who'd given you an early boost—you'd at least attempt to behave yourself. Paris Hilton is not like you. Everyone's favorite celebutard threw a backstage hissy fit at Heatherette last night that resulted in the show being delayed for over an hour, according to a spy on the scene. As the audience grew anxious, a member of the video crew was heard carping to his producer that Hilton had tried to back out at the last second and had to be guilted into staying.

• ... Is Suzy Menkes losing her juice? Widely regarded as the most important fashion critic around, the International Herald Tribune scribe is said to be the only journalist, apart from Vogue's Anna Wintour, whose tardiness can actually hold up a show. But her reputation failed to precede her yesterday—not once, but twice.

At Narciso Rodriguez she was forced to wait in the "laypersons" line while Wintour and daughter Bee Schaffer breezed past her into the space. As she awaited entry, Menkes was overheard griping that she'd had it with New York Fashion Week, having just been turned away from the Cloak presentation on Crosby Street. KCD, the PR firm that handled the trendy boutique label's event, told would-be attendees the space was simply too packed. But would it have been too packed for Anna?

• ... Of course, maybe bloggers are to blame for Menkes' woes. As the Wall Street Journal noted, self-published Internet nobodies have been swarming like midges at virtually every fashion event this week. One seasoned photographer laments, "Every time I try to take a photo of a designer, there is some kid from Idontknowwhatfashionblog.com waving his fucking camera phone in the shot. It's gotten out of control." Not to say that magazines aren't obsessively courting those very same bloggers.

GQ has jumped on the Cobrasnake bandwagon, importing vertiginously tall blogger Yvan Rodic from Paris (of party photo site facehunter.blogspot.com) to capture New York's "street style." Rodic, who jetted in last Thursday night, has been hitting all the week's major bashes, from the Marc Jacobs after-party to last night's Uma Thurman/TAG Heuer event at the Waterfront. According to his MySpace page, Rodic is into "fag hags, pro anas, and Pete Doherty lookalikes." He also has a car and driver for the week on Condé's dime. Suzy, alas, is cabbing it.
