WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: 2012 Is No Disaster At Theaters

As expected, the disaster epic 2012 ruled the box office this weekend. The estimated tally is $65 million in ticket sales. A Christmas Carol wasn't even close for second position. The Jim Carrey holiday flick brought in $22.3 million. Third place went to George Clooney's wacky comedy, The Men Who Stare At Goats with $6.2 million. The weekend's real winner was Precious which continues to do spectacular numbers. It came in fourth with $6.1 million while playing at only 114 theaters. By comparison, it brought it just as much as Goats which was on 2453 screens! Michael Jackson's This Is It is still hanging on. It came in fifth with $5.1 million.

The rest of the top 10: The Fourth Kind - $4.7 million; Couples Retreat - $4.3 million; Paranormal Activity - $4.2 million; Law Abiding Citizen - $3.9 million; The Box - $3.2 million.

Jim Carrey's multi-character performance in the animated A Christmas Carol was the winner at the box office this weekend, taking in an estimated $31 million in ticket sales. Michael Jackson's This Is It suffered an almost 40 percent fall-off from last weekend. It took in $14 million for second place. Opening in far fewer theaters, the wacky George Clooney comedy, The Men Who Stare At Goats, brought in a respectable $13.3 million for third place. The Fourth Kind took fourth place with $12.5 million.

Michael Jackson can still sell tickets. The bio-concert film, Michael Jackson's This Is It, won the box office wars with an estimated $21.3 million in ticket sales. The figure is less than the producers had hoped for but they are more than making up for soft North American business with boffo numbers from the rest of the world, especially Japan.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE: Paranormal Activity Is A Shocker In #1 Place

It only cost $15,000 to shoot but Paranormal Activity is going to make the four friends behind the home-made thriller very rich and very in-demand in Hollywood. Word-of-mouth and Internet buzz drove it to the number one position at the box office this weekend with an estimated take of $22 million. Second place went to Saw VI with $14.8 million. Where the Wild Things Are fell off substantially from last weekend. It came in number three with $14.4 million. Fourth place went to Law Abiding Citizen which sold an estimated $12.7 million in tickets. Couples Reatreat held on for fifth place with $11.1 million.

The rest of the top 10: Astro Boy - $7 million; The Stepfather - $6.5 million; Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant - $6.3 million; Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs - $5.6 million; Zombieland - $4.3 million.

Horror Rules At The Weekend Box Office

The Final Destination WAS the surprise winner at movie theatres this weekend.  With no major stars but lots of blood and gore, it took in an estimated $28,335,000 in ticket sales.  The horror flick easily beat out last weekend's winner, Inglorious Basterds.  The Brad Pitt World War II farce took in $20,041,000 in its second weekend.  Third place belongs to another horror story, Halloween 2, with an estimated $17,405,000.
